hiya Mark !!
here's step one .
so far ,
the laying up of the panels...
1] eight 55ml cups full of resin ... [six pictured , five still needing filling ]
2] one cup , about half-filled , to be poured onto the glass ....
.... prior to laying down the first few layers of 4oz cloth ...brush it on ...
3] let the resin sit for a li'l bit
4] add cloth [this is the first layer of 36 layers ]...
[I tend to add 4-5 layers of 4oz cloth at a time , others may do it differently , no doubt?!]
then , when the panel is fully layed up , it's filler coated...
these were nearly two hours work , start to finish...
When the panels are dried , I use a paintscraper to prise / slide them from the glass , and peel the masking tape off them , and leave them , with the inside facing up, to air outdoors ....(this one has had the edges trimmed with a jigsaw , too)
So, Mark , stay tuned for more photos .... that is , once I find WHERE I put those templates for you ?!
Sweet ben!!!. Hey those curtains would make a damn fine inlay!?. Great ( and very very neat ) work ben!.
Cheers
Mark
cheers Mark , glad you're online at the moment !!
"Hey those curtains would make a damn fine inlay!?. " [ yep , but the curtains are nylon , unfortunately ie: they'd MELT hahahh ]
I just hope I can find the templates for you [I have a whole ENVELOPE full of templates , from the last five or so years , but the most recent ones will be around the size you asked for ...
stayed tuned , it may be a few days till I get the chance to break out the camera and get it together
.....FOUND 'em !!
righty-ho, Marcus ...
here are a few for starters , around the size and rake you requested
[ I'll also post some SMALLER templates too, if you like ? ...to me , " twin keels" always look WAAAAY too HUGE !! .... but that's just ME , because I prefer SMALL [with capital letters!] fins and keels, myself !]
Mark , I can do template 5 with 1" rake if you like ? [and obviously , ANY of these cardboard templates can be modified to whatever you like ]
I hope this helps / something here jumps off the screen , and takes your fancy ?
cheers mate !
ben
Feels like "perfect match"!.
"um, i'll take contestant number 4 please" hahaha. I like number 4 ben, they look sweet. They look like a bigger version of the ones i had on my twin keel ( remember them! ).
P.S i have a set of your fins on my bat tail quad at present. The clear set you sent me, im using the big ones up front, and some SF4 as rear fins on this board. I know you like pics!.
In this pic its just the standard SF4 set, though i took the front ones out and have put your fins in. They are like the Aipa twinny's but a little smaller. Hoping i get them wet tomorrow morning around 5am.
Mark , do you still need me to have the probox tab as far forward as you said before ?
how far up would that place the base trailing edge of the keel , I wonder ?
cheers mate
ben
Hey ben i looked at doing a twinzer/supercharged setup, but the main fin would only be 7" from the tail, which i think is not far enough forward for a twin FIN, i think they're usually 8-9'' up aren't they? Hmm might play around and have a look tomorrow. Will report if i get it wet. Had those extra plugs in this board for months and still havent got to try it, im itching to try it. It's 6'6'' x 21 x 2 3/4 but thinned out in the rails. Well, for me anyway, im used to hamburger rails ( they work for me ), so these are probably more like mid boxy, but thinner than im used to, so i have trouble in small waves with it. Peaky/hollow waves, or even fat but decent sized waves it goes great.
hiya again Mark !
so, is that
" the BACK [base] edge of the back keel would be 7" up from the tail tip , with the number 4 template , when the probox tab is 2" back from the [base of the] LEADING edge of the fin ?
[does that sound clear enough ? I can post a photo of another keel template with the tab forward , if that will clarify it ?]
cheers
ben
[something like this tab positioning I mean , Mark ...gives you an idea how much 'overhang' there will be ....]
I think it can start 3" from the front of the keel ben. Will measure and let you know today or tomorrow.
Cheers
That fin setup was very loose. Might look at keeping the twins up front, but try the SF4's in the rear plugs, OR, try the twins in the "middle" plugs and some LB sides in the front plugs. I'll just see how it looks.
Hey ben, it needs to start 2" from the front of the fin mate. It'll be fine then. 3" would mean it will go close to overhanging hahah.
Cheers mate.
nice template, wouldnt mind and fcs set for my dim-SIM...or maybe Mark can send me a copy of that template ???
hiya Mr. Pridmore !
thanks for the compliment
besides the ones illustrated , I have HEAPS of keel templates lying around here ...at one stage , as chipfish61 , I did a keel template thread here , but I think the photos disappeared ... (or , maybe it was in the resources section here ?? from memory ... )
just let me know and I'll send you the cardboard originals if you like .
Although , having said that , I guess nowadays just about anyone with a computer and printer can print out these shots , and enlarge / reduce them as needed to get the original dimensions , or a modified version ??
cheers !
ben
oops
I like my fins and have quite a collection but want MORE and MORE.....I keep any I get my hands on and also have a really good guy who makes fins for me so anything is easily accessed for me, very lucky but I dont have many keels so I'm looking to get some, and also singles and basically any fins at all...but mostly FCS compatible ones coz thats what I use in 99% of my boards....your fins always look good mate, shame you are a million miles away or I'd be hassling you to do some for me.....
Ben, they look smooth as silk!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I surfed the 5'8'' in sub knee high today, even my longboard riding mate was having trouble. Pop up, get forward and trim baby!!!. Will definately add superchargers to it. Missing the free flowing, drag reduced freedom.
Pridmore, get some Proboxes mate seriously fun playing around with the cant, and a little bit of forward and back movement. With the solid base on the fins, they feel very solid and connected to the board. Ridiculously easy to install.
Cheers
okay , here's the next stage for your keels , Mark !!
So, Mark ....
the question remains ...
would you like me to leave them a fairly THICK foil ?
or
would you like me to make them pretty thin and flexing a little [like the multi-swirled "swaylocks inspired" keels I sent you previously ] ??
cheers !
