Hey Chip,
I don't imagine it would be hard at all...remember the pic you posted with the board that had stencilled glass so the images wrapped the rails?
I have'nt glassed one like that, but I HAVE sprayed through glass...(as well as netting, doilies and stuff...) to get a texture effect on filler coat sprays. The paint was automotive acrylic and it showed up fine on the glass.
So you would only be taking it one step further and actually glassing the glass!
You could do it with a gun or brushes, and probably any paint type, then have it as a layer in the middle of a panel, just like the cheezy hawaiian shirt fins which use a layer of cotton. Or multi-layers all higgle-de-piggledee for depth like a Jackson Pollock painting...
Have a go! It could'nt be a lot harder than dribbling some pigment colours. .(BTW...Luuurv the little multi-coloured sections of panel you sent.) I think the glow-in-the-dark panel will go for a set of side-ers for a widowmaker I just got an order...
There's loads of crew out there who would pay for panels mate...I think you should step up and get into a little business...send panel AND an invoice, anywhere.
Josh
thanks heaps Josh !
yes , i asked because , last night , i did the ‘rattlecan spray onto cloth’ that i posted previously [ Ross here at the longboards shop did it originally]
i’m glad you liked the panels mate , they are only small eh ? bigger ones to come later …let me know [in a pm , if you like , what you reckon the costing could be , were i to sell them …i sure NEED the money at the moment .
i have 4 " x6" , 5x7" , 5 1/2 " x 7 1/2" , 6" x 8" , and two 8 x 10" panels
i have 24 panels that are already glassed ,
and have just finished cutting out my 28th panel of cloth .
i think resin will be all i’ll need for christmas and the new year !
cheers
ben
…i took a photo the other day , of the glow in the dark panel , doing just THAT , in my cupboard …they sure look GREEN in the dark , DON’T they ?!
hi josh !
did you finish the fin panels yet ?
if so , what did you end up making ?
photos , please !!
cheers
ben
Hey Chip,
I'm still building the board that I'll do some glow-in-the-dark side-biters for...
Its been bagged together today, a 7' widowmaker gun.
soon, soon...
Josh
unreal !
I look forward to seeing the FINished article[s] , Josh !
will you be doing any wild sprays on it ? [is it wood veneer, 'sunova' style ?
cheers !
ben
Hey Chip,
I got the widowmaker done far enough that it looks like something, so I could size up fins for it. I finally foiled up the "Glow-in-the-dark" panel you sent me.
This was my first job at age 16, laying up fin panel, sawing and foiling, so two lil' sidebiters was a doddle.
Only just fitted my template on the panel!
And here's the board they're for, no plugs or box yet, with the composite single fin, both awaiting outer lam.
I have'nt tested the Glow-in-the-dark yet, maybe for a Grand Finale!
Josh
Very nice looking board Josh!
Can’t wait to see it finished.
Hey Cam,
Yeah, I think Wingnut and I will be having a tug of love over his one...hmmm, I wonder how much deposit he put down...
Josh
She’s mine Josh!
50% already down, not letting this beauty go…lol.
thanks very much for posting those shots , Josh !
always good to see panels / fins i send getting USED !
CHEERS mate !
ben
....looks like i need to send you some bigger panels eh ?!
( i got more "glow in the dark " ones done yesterday ! plus , PLENTY of others , of course . thanks , benefactor , for the $$$ for the resin to make this all POSSIBLE !! CHEERS !)

i can't wait to see that !!

hey josh if i sent you some panels , would you mind selling them to your crew , and take what is reasonable [cut] for yourself , please ?
i'm always stoked to help out fellow surfers and get different [?unique?] stuff out there in the the world ....
[/quote]
well josh ,
i sprayed a few sheets of 4oz cloth with a stencil that Ross used for one of his boards [so he will have matching fins , eventually.]
i'll let you know / show you when the panel is laid up ...
cheers
ben
Hey Chip,
How do you like this for a decal? I did'nt want to go too far from the sketch you gave me.
Regarding the selling of the fin panel...I'd take time and shoe-leather...e-mail to crew...stuff I'm already doing, for my own gig, so g'worn, out there, cap-in-hand you go.
Josh
hi josh , good to hear from you !
yep , that looks good .... can you add 'the three hairs' too, please mate ?
for fins, if the finished decals are about the size of a 20 cent piece , that would be groovy , josh !
.....then , i'll send you a panel with them in it , if you like ? or would you prefer a 'swaylocks inspired' pair of fins ?
cheers for the reply mate ... [we could work together , your boards my fins , on future projects if you like ?]
i still reckon another 'swaylocks inspired' shortboard [something in the 5'10"- 6'4" range , perhaps?] , made and airbrushed by you , with five fin setup [plugged] options , would be GREAT ! ....and i'd send you a myriad of fins for it ....waddya reckon , mate ? [maybe it could be just a "swaylocks vicco" board , due to the huge distances [and expense !!] of board transport in our sunburnt country ?]
cheers !

Hi Chip,
I'm excited now!
Check out the Glow-in-the-dark! Woooo...
I can't make you a millionaire any day soon, but I'd like to offer my customers the option of handmade fins. So let me know what sizes and colours you have.
Josh
You guys are too much! Glow in the dark fins for those early morning / late evening sessions! Might help finding a lost board on the rocks, eh?
On a side note, Josh, what kind of saw do you use to cut out your fins? I have trouble on the FCS tabbed fins keeping the inside cuts straight and true using a jigsaw (close enough, but would like to improve). I was thinking a good scroll saw would help. I’ve used a band saw, but didn’t have much luck with it either.
Josh (and Chipper)’
just found this thread and that board looks awesome, looking forward to seeing a few more pics of it. The glow in the dark fins are CLASSIC, total Chipfish madness. Reminds me of why I like forums again!
Hey surfthis...my little bandsaw had a busted blade at the time I wanted to cut those fins out, so I just used a jigsaw. Whatever you use, blunt blades are a bitch.
I have a Dremel with a tiny little sanding barrel for detailing the tabs and base fitting. Dremels are worth their weight in gold.
And Kirk...more pics soon. The customer is taking it away from me this weekend, so I have to practice detachment.
Its hard...
Josh
Josh,
That board looks AWESOME!!! … and glow in the dark fins - pure gold
If the customer fails to pick it up, just let me know and I’ll help with the detatchment
BTW: I’ve been riding the Powder Keg all Summer and it goes great!
