frankenbuild

6’5 x 22 x 3, dual density, stringerless, eps, kwik kick epoxied tapered bamboo veneer, resin-x laminated, probox quad, thumbtail…frankenboard

I took the tail template off of the 6’10 thumbtail from here … the nose came off a template I had lying on the floor for the outline of the deck skin for a HWS I’m helping my neighbor with…I kinked it out a bit and blended it all to a widepoint a couple inches ahead of center…I am pretty sure there was beer involved…my paternity was running out and wanted to get this albatross finished before I had to get back to the grind.

this came out of a 7’ LD-04 from Segway…I took it right out of the center, leaving about 1.5" of rocker in the tail and bit over 4" in the nose.

I had the dual density blanks left from a previous project…I am abandoning this nonsense in favor of simple 2.5 and 3lb density blanks…I made my neighbor a fish using 3lb and it came out great…shaped wonderfuly and is comparable in finished weight; not worth the work and overhead of building blanks for an ounce out of the center.

the shaping and finishing on these gets tedious with those epoxy glue lines too…takes a lot of detail work to get the bumps out…getting to this point isn’t even halfway it seems sometimes…

I used some kwik kick to attach the skins…came out fast, but I wasn’t able to pull them as fast as I had hoped, but it was still only 2.5 hours in the bag instead of 4.

I am getting more agressive with the bamboo tapering

I also laminated this board with ResinX

I got a ton of really valuable guidance from bammbamm and synergytodd.

laminating with ResinX went really well…came out great…good flip times.

hot coat is done, boxes are installed, just have some (a lot of) finish sanding and touch up work to do.

looking to find the bottom end…the floppy noodle end of the stringerless high density eps + bamboo build and tighten it up from there.

Grasshopper, you have snatched the pebble!      Bamboo looks good, and the shape does too.    Well done.

thank you, but these pictures are made purposely small! hahaha

yes, looking good.  I am thinking more in the deck patch possibilities myself.  If you lose the balsa rails, as most have, then why not?

balsa rails are a really tedious build out…it’s another chunk of money you have to put in to the board and a lot of that just winds up as scraps on the floor.

I’m pretty keen on what I’m doing now…an additional thought I’ve had is a springer on the bottom of the board just in the area just ahead and just behind the front fins…but haven’t really futzed with it yet.

Nice outline, although I believe that board was begging to be a stinger.  Didn’t you have a stinger n the works?

wasn’t drunk enough to pull the trigger on that one.

nice to see what you're working on 'Afoaf' , good on you for posting photos of what you make

please ,  keep the photos coming ! [as they say , "a picture is worth ..."]

  cheers !

well, all tolled, the finish certainly didn’t come out perfect, but my first stab at resin-x came out way better than my first epoxy attempt.

the stuff is so hard I feel like it makes for easier sanding…you’re less likely to blast through the weave, especially if you are using lighter grits (I began at 100!)

can’t wait to ride this board…the first thumbtail was sooo good to me…

I took an inch off the tail rocker to get it closer to my beloved modfish’s and used a thicker blank…this board came out of the middle of a larger blank so I left the deck sort of flatish to keep the volume under the chest.

totally cleared out those racks for those who know…6’6" is out of rotation with a busted nose…been on the 6’10 mod, 7’2" rocket or 8’8" spence hull exclusively since late november when things really started to light up around here.

the shop cats seem nonplussed about the whole thing…
