freaking out over a small ding

I just finished my latest board and it truly is a work of art.  I used an EPS blank, 2 layers 6oz top, 1 bottom, glassed fins.

The unsanded hotcoat was the final coat of epoxy.

Surfed this board 4 times.

Today I noticed the teeniest tiniest brown spot on the deck. It really is like a SPECK.  But everything else is stark white, so I noticed it.

Put my mouth up to it and started sucking…and…theres water.  WHAT THE HELL DO I DO?  How the hell could this have happened? Seriously, I thought I was done with all these bad glass jobs of the past, and what do ya know- once again the board is frickin ruined. who knows how much waters in there?

All I really need is like 0.0000001 ounces of resin, but theres no way I could get it into this PIN HOLE! I guess I will have to sand the damn thing down and recoat. And what to do about the water?!? Please help I am freaking out right now.

First off relax, its a ding, not the end of the world. Let it dry out and put a tiny patch over it like any other ding. Using a container of damp rid near the ding might help draw some of the moisture out. Not sure how to get the water out though. I have heard of some people creating an extra vent and letting it dry for a while. Either way a tiny patch and your are good to go.

Yeah, if I were in your situation I’d use a dremel-type tool to cut a neat and small (1"x1") square on the speck/ding  and take that section of the glass out, to ensure that all the water dries out over a few days.

Then, I would refill the hole with some epoxy and patch it up with 2 layers of cloth, circularly cut, the top one just a little larger than the bottom one, that covers the refilled area and about 1/2" to 1" of excess all around.

That would probbly fix the situation.

Cool.

I have drilled a hole of 1/4" thru the fiberglass but barely into the foam. It will hopefully dry out in my hot ass attic. the foam did not feel spongy… but there I definitely was sucking out water

Your off to a good start,no need to cook the board in the attic or cut chunks of glass out.Drill another hole the same size at the other end of the board.Attach a shop vac to the original pin hole and seal it off air tight then turn it on,you should feel suction on the open hole at the other end of the board.let it run for a while to suck the bulk of the water out.Let it set and finish drying out as long as you can, then treat the 2 holes like small dings, scuff, glass patch, resin, sand, hotcoat, finish sand.I’ve done this using a small space heater on low sitting near the open hole on the board and had the board dried out in a few hours and fixed the holes for a surf the next morning.

for this kind of situation i would just put a sticker over it , and done

Howzit knowaloha, I agree but first I would fill the 1/4" hole with epoxy then sand it down then put the sticker over it. Don't you just love sticked ding repair 101. Aloha,Kokua
