Freaky wide tail Lisfish on the backhand

Picked up this sick little Lis fish type board at a shop. The dang things is hard to surf on the backhand or is it just my substandard ability to slip into retro mode. the tail is about 17.5 and has about a 5 inch or so deep fish tail. What is the trick to retro riding 70’s flashback groovers…

What is the trick to retro riding 70’s flashback > groovers… Hey freaky, I’ve got a fish tailed board with a 17.5" tail on it. The thing is very fin sensitive. I don’t know what’s on yours but that will make a big difference. A tail this wide has to have something under it to control it before the guy on top can do a damn thing at all. Mahalo, Rich

What is the trick to retro riding 70’s flashback > groovers… I’m riding two of Steve Brom’s fishes and found that frontside my foot placement is wider (backfoot more over the fins) then when riding backside. Just find out what works for you, it took me some time to get used to riding backside to, found it was a little harder to get the same speed as frontside. These boards have glass on (semi)keel fins, so I never tryed them with other fins but I been told that these fins are a must on boards like these. Peter Rijk.

If you learned to surf on a thruster you probably rely on the fins to do all your turning. On a fish, you rely on the rail and the fins to make your turns. So dont push on the fins so much. Put the board on its rail by making sure your heel presses down like on a skateboard. You must also stay centered over your board as much as possible. Stay low cannonball style. If its a steep drop, go straight down then bury the rail with your heel and go back up. This is different then then the thurster which can take of side ways and avoid the drop. It is a matter of surfing styles too. But believe me, the real fish is faster then anything you will ride. Hey Magic, The Fish still screams in Dogtown. SteveA

What is the trick to retro riding 70’s flashback > groovers… maybe it’s the shape…i too own a brom fish and have been riding it almost exclusively for close to 3yrs now. backside is a blast, especially laying down a roundhouse cutback after a fat bottom turn. try using steveA 's advice on setting up off the bottom in bigger or a more hollow waves. on a mushburger, just attack…or see the magic man @ www.surfenginez.com there is a reason why he’s known as the magic man in this forum…

Docned, Good to hear your still riding the fish. I have been trading off between my thruster and the brom fish. But I have to admit, I always get longer faster rides on the fish. Only time it dosent work is on those days that are closing out. But, what board does work on those days anyway? SteveA

steve–i always end up back on the fish…my wife got me c-5 for xmas surprise last year, not as fun and it needs bigger waves to a certain extent. it’s gonna be time to replace my beloved fish with another soon, i’ve talked to the magic man and he says the red-x system is good for removable fins…easier to take it traveling than the glass ons…

It might just be your footing that should change. Try putting your back foot a little closer to the inside rail rather than right over the stringer. When you cut back just slide it back to the stringer. Going backside on my hulls, I do the same thing only its my front foot that does the sliding.
