Free boards for kids in Nicaragua, need help.

Hi All,

Hoping you all can give me some advice…

I travel to Nicaragua a couple of times a year, the local kids down there are great but don’t have any money for boards or repair, (or shoes or clothes for that matter). I’m trying to improve my ding repair skills by working on boards that other folk would toss in the trash and haul them down to give away to the kids there.

I have 4 right now that I’m hoping to salvage most have VERY bad deck delaminations as well as the regular assortment of other ailments.

I’ve been trying to fix the decks by routing the delam out, lightly sanding the foam underneath, then painting UV activated resin onto the foam and pasting the original glass patch back on, filling the router cut with Q-cell, sanding all that, then putting two layers of 4 or 6 oz glass on top with laminating resin, hot coat and sand.

The boards look ok, but my question is do you think they’ll hold up for a while doing it this way? The first one I did, I didn’t put the original glass back, on but instead smoothed is out with Q-cell. It seems like it came out ok, but now there is a huge bright white Q-cell patch in the old yellowed deck so it looks funky. If I use the original glass it looks better but I don’t know what’s happening structurally.

I know all of this isn’t really how you guys would really fix stuff but I don’t have the money to buy these kids boards. I do have some time and like working on them so what do you think??

Thanks for any help you can give,

best way to fix a delam is to drill a small hole at both ends, squirt it full of resin, and then just stick it back down. no need to cut, fill, or replace any glass.

Soulstice,

Thanks for the advice. We are talking 1/2 of the deck, size delams here, won’t using that much resin make the board weight a ton?

don’t fill the void with resin…drill a hole at either end and glue the delaminated glass back down to the deck. squirt it full of resin, and then weigh down the delam (try sandbags). the excess resin will get pushed out of the holes, and the when it cures, the glass will be stuck back down on the deck.

just make sure you have taped off around the holes so the exess resin doesn’t make a big mass. and wrap the sandbags in something that won’t stick to the resin – like #233, or some wax paper.

any group of people here on sways [from west oz , or able to get to west oz] , going anywhere near where ‘nurock’ lives soon ?

i’d like to give some boards…

Howzit soulstice, easier to just cover the deck with wax paper, that way the resin won’t stick to the sand bags and the lam resin will suck the wax off the paper and make it easier to sand the excess resin.Aloha,Kokua

agreed

Kokua,

What do you think of the strength and integrity of going with the injection method? Also, where do you get a large enough syringe for the resin injections?

Howzit nurock, Go to your local drug store and they will have them. I went to a Walgreens in Az and they just gave me 3 for free. As long as you don’t ask for the needle they don’t mind. Aloha,Kokua

Cool initiative Nurock!

when your foam has been too rotten by moisture, don’t be afraid to just hack of the damaged bits, replace the foam with a chunk (offcuts from a shaper or some places sell blocks of PU foam, otherwise you can get some two component sets and “grow your own”) and re shape it to match the board and re-glass. It ain’t pretty but should be doable and be great practice.

Kokua, this had me in stitches, I actually recently considered going to the local methadon bus because I needed a syringe for a repair I was working on… I chickened out but boy did this make me giggle…

Dave, is your new avatar () in honor of this guy?

Bellicose Chewbacca sets off boulevard Star Wars

Los Angeles Times

Feb. 3, 2007 05:47 PM HOLLYWOOD -- The buzz on Hollywood Boulevard Friday was over the head-butting Chewbacca who police say crossed over to the dark side in front of hundreds of tourists at Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

Los Angeles Police Department officers arrested “Star Wars” street performer Frederick Evan Young, 44, in his furry brown wookiee costume Thursday on a charge of misdemeanor battery for allegedly attacking a tour guide who complained about the way he was treating two visitors from Japan.

The alleged assault – witnessed by Superman and other superhero impersonators – is the latest clash between visitors and performers dressed as movie and cartoon characters outside the landmark cinema. They collect tips from tourists who pose for pictures and watch them perform in front of the theater where generations of stars have placed their footprints in concrete. advertisement

Tourists have complained that some costumed characters have turned abusive when they refused to pay them to pose for pictures. Two years ago, actors dressed as superhero Mr. Incredible, Elmo the Muppet and Scream were arrested for aggressive begging. More recently, an actor portraying slasher movie favorite Freddie Krueger was taken into custody for allegedly stabbing another man, although no charges were filed.

Thursday’s incident comes as police and Hollywood officials are trying to rein in the colorful assortment of actors and wannabes who perform for crowds.

They admit the alleged head butt was a setback.

Authorities said the altercation began when a Star Line Tours guide allegedly observed the Chewbacca character harassing two young girls from a rival Japanese tour company.

When guide Brian Sapir asked the performer not to touch the visitors, Young allegedly became angry.

“You could see in his eyes he was exploding beneath the mask,” Sapir asserted Friday. "He yelled at me, Nobody tells this wookiee what to do!’ "

After a security guard suggested that the 6-foot-5 Young take a walk down Hollywood Boulevard to cool off, he became more agitated, said Sapir, 32. “He threw off his mask and walked toward me and slammed his head into my forehead.”

Other security guards held Young for police. He was later released on $20,000 bail and is expected in court later this month, said police spokesman Lt. Paul Vernon.

A police source said that a performer dressed as Superman witnessed the assault and was interviewed by police. Other street performers said that before police arrived Superman called producers from ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Show,” which is taped across the boulevard from the theater, and a cameraman videotaped Young being led off by officers.

Neither Young nor his attorney could be reached for comment on Friday.

Under city rules, street performers can’t state a price or demand money to take a photo with them, Vernon said. “They only can ask for a donation,” he said. “They also cannot touch or follow the tourists if they walk away.”

Continuing disputes led to a “superhero summit” last year between authorities and about a dozen of the performers, which police said significantly reduced conflict on the boulevard. Street actors predicted Thursday’s incident could lead to a formal city crackdown.

ROFL!!

No but I guess I had a sixth sense!!

LOL!!!

Hey Nurock, I have a new board I shaped from a broken semi-gun my buddy was throwing away. It’s a 5’6" quad diamond tail. It has really low rocker for a standard shortboard (has rocker similar to a fish), as I was limited by the usuable part of the broken board. But I think it would be perfect for a kid somewhere to mess around on. Let me know if you want it to bring down there.

Hi Drakonis and any other potential board donors,

First let me say THANK YOU to all of you that have offered up boards!!

I’m willing to haul just about anything anyone wants to donate. I’ll pay the extra air costs to take boards down to Nicaragua when I go (usually twice a year). The problem is I’m in Tahoe so getting boards to me can be a problem. I usually go to Santa Cruz a couple of times a month and I am willing to pick up in the Bay Area if that makes it any easier on anyone.

I’ll do any ding repair here and try to make them as usable as possible. Unfortunately I can’t pay to have boards shipped here. However, if anyone is passing through Tahoe we can offer up a night here in “Casa Nurock” in South Lake Tahoe, (close to Sierra, Heavenly and Kirkwood), if you want to drop 'em off

Thanks again to all for you advice and generosity!!

Nurock
