Free lap sanding

Thanks guys for all the tips!!! i decided to go with filler and sanded the  lap, came up well.will see if it worked when i filler coat whole board.

Just a question. Would it be common to filler coat twice?

The trick is to cut along the tape with your blade held horizontal, not vertical. Sliding upon the rail, so to speak. Hard to explain without a sketch or photo…

hi balsa

you dont need to go into it much further i think, horizontal is a pretty decent way of explaining it…

is afoafs board with you?

balsa is correct. this is how huie explained to me and he has been glassing for 50 years.

if you cut correctly they dont even need touching with a a surform or file or anything. just at the nose and tail. also you need to do them at the right time. they are sometime visible but look very clean sometimes they are invisible if you get everything right. if you practice them on clears then you colour work will be superior.

if you must use a sander im thinking the new digital dremels with an angle grinder attachment to be useful and inexpensive.i use and old dremel and it works pretty good. the new ones are a lot better

here is a video of how to cutlap. you are laying a sharp stanley blade on its side. if you cut to late then your edge will end up raised. about 2 hours is about right i think

you can glass straight over it pretty much, just clean up the few dodgy spots with a surform blade

tape up

the reason why to do it. they take time to master. both taping and cutting. why not practice on clears. if you cant do good colourwork then you havent got much future as a self employed backyard glasser. why would people use you when they can get tints and polish down the road for the same price

the other thing is there is no point taking shortcuts when you break down the time and material costs of a board>> taping and cutting is nothing overall. neither is spending a couple more minutes on glassing. or whatever part. if the board takes another hour so be it. the material cost are so high your better searching for savings in that area. like importing your materials directly from china and skipping out the wholesalers or using a cheaper fin system.

dont get sucked into the piece rate factory mentality. its a boring and uninspiring existence.

fast is good, but only if there is pleasure and reward for yourself in the process

if you are going fast to make someone else money then you may as well be pressing numberplates in jail. it is the same mentality

I just watched the cut lap clips that you put up Silly.  Does Paul always work in his underpants?  Could this be his pleasure and reward you speak about?  I guess he just really loves surfboards?

thats the advantage of getting good at what you do. work from home and wear a dress if you like

Don’t get sucked into buying whatever is cheapest just because it’s cheapest either. Part of the reason some materials are so expensive is people just buy the cheapest and that’s it. If people spent a little more on higher quality instead of whatever is cheapest chances are those “more expensive” items would come down in price. Also you can get from most wholesalers and retailers what you can’t get from most places in China. Good service and someone who speaks the same language. The competing on price thing shafts not only consumers but also producers and leads to what you just stated. The piece rate factory mentality.

the same roll of glass, same brand is 200$ cheaper in australia

why is that

a fcs plug costs about 10 cents to make

why do we pay 7$

resin is 140$ a drum in australia

why do we pay over 200$ and its made in NEW zealand

a board cost just under 300 to make in materials

i can save 100 and put it in my own pocket using cheaper materials

not because they are inferior. it is because they are “NOT A FUCKING RIPOFF”

u get glass from china for 50$ a roll . and its basically the same shit

so if i do a shortboard board for 550 and can make it for 200 material cost then thats 350 a day before tax

and i can fuck around as much as i like, even fit in a surf or two and still make my 350

why would i put the money in wholesalers and brandnames hands when they just get the shit from china anyway

550NZ is a fair price to pay for a poly or epoxy shortboard. anymore then 650 is a ripoff for a clear

i dont know many people with lots of money and the ones that do have it are usually liars, cheats and theives

im happy to deal with people that only want to pay 550 cuz thats a fair price for people with limited budgets that are having trouble paying there rent and keeping there jobs, let alone blowing 900 bucks on a shortboard

the only reason i made compsands and epoxys is because i didnt have to use JPS farking glass etc etc .i can make my own eps blanks for 20 bucks and glass them with a NZ made epoxy for cheaper then the price of polyester surfboard resin and use boatbuilders glass for 3 bucks a meter. when i see the surf industry trying to make big coin selling me so called superior epoxy and superior cooler foam . for a so called superior product. it just makes me shake my head at the stupidity of people

Small size surform and/or hard block with 60. Use good paper, so little black specks don’t come off and get down into the foam.

If you cut your lap on the curve of the rail, you can hit the apex cleanly and not scratch the foam.
