from mutton to [nearly] lamb....

okay , so this will be the follow-up thread to “in the spirit of lazarus”

unfortunately the computers i use don’t allow me to copy and paste ,

so…

i’ve asked a friendly fellow swaylockian here to post them for me via my photobucket account …

cheers !

ben

so , the background again ...

it started life , via being donated by my neighbour , 'roadkill john' , as a roadside-find   6'3" winged pintail , channel bottom , single-fin  [as seen on the aforementioned thread].

the first step was to re-template it . [but,  after i had stripped the glass off it , about 2 1/2" of tail came away , due to the tail's thinness and the channels]

after re-templating , we filled the channels with 'spackle'.

we ended up narrowing the tail a bit too.

PICT0519.jpg

my mate ['thing'] did a great job working  on the rails , putting vee in the bottom ,  and managed to get a bit more tail and nose rocker into it too. THANKS, heaps , Sir !

The intention is to ride it as a single fin [although , admittedly, i have only done that twice so far , choosing to do 'widowmaker' setups the other times , and once as a twinny, which took a bit of getting used to !! ]

then it was spray time [i went with rattlecans]. the bottom was a slightly different colour , due to the areas of  'spackle'.

we glassed it together and lammed the 'swaylocks inspired' logo hicksy designed

next came the two probox side plugs [the first time he or i had installed that system on a board ...we don't get them much here in west oz...so , THANKS,  guys for sending a pair ! much appreciated !]

then the board was sanded .

   the dimensions ?

c.14"nose x 6' 1"  x 20" x 14"tail [the 'pod' is about 5" ]  x c. 2 1/2 thick [i'd like to do the next one thinner ...with the bog on the bottom , it ended up heavy ....hence , i kept it [ so far , at least ! ]  as  only a one/two/three fin setup option.] so far i have made five fin panels for it. twin keels , twin fins , thrusters , and of course ...er ..."unusual " / hybrids  " fins"

the original board had quite nice rocker , as far as ?mid-to-late 70s? single fins here went [a lot of the others i have seen as roadkill were flattish with AWFUL rails , and foil !]

....to be continued  .....

  cheers !

Wow, you guys really did bring that one back from the dead.  Nice job.

...thanks mate !

  yep ,

it DEFINATELY helps , having a  great shaper help out !

[he normally makes boards a LOT quicker than this ... it sat in his shed for WEEKS ,  as I was doing a course ,  and work experience ,  and was also ill at the time ]

Looks sick ben!

Wow, That's a great resurection, Ben.  Can an old guy like you still ride a skiny little board like that?  Mike

hiya mike !!

great to hear from you mate !

[or maybe that could be... "can a skinny guy [like me] ride an old board like that ?!"]

yep,

  it definately takes a bit more effort paddling , to get onto waves ... (6' 1"  x 20" ain't exactly my 9'4 x 23" mal is it ?!  haha )

still , I'm hoping that ,  come summer , when I use it with one or two of my 5 sets of keels , as an alternative "fish" [minus fishtail] I will be paddling harder and skate it down the line in shallow waist [to ? hopefully chest high? peelers ?] , occassionally

    cheers !

    ben

p.s. -   Mike , can I interest you in a fin panel , by the way ?

That's the mint sauce Ben   ;)

Ben That looks really good, what a great job! Look forward to having a flounder on it next year, Allah willing!

wow …so you’re a muslim now , “lazarus” ? hahahah

yep , you’ll probably ride it better than me , considering the job you did on joel tudor’s surftech [i couldn’t ride that thing !]

let’s hope the airlines let you have a ticket to perth this next time eh ? [no chance of returning from norway via here , i suppose , simon ?!]

cheers

...and...the not-so-pretty , semi-spackled bottom ...

PICT0622.jpg

Looks like a nice shape ben, can't wait to see pics of the finished product!

Liking the shapes guys,

I am looking to make a similar shape in the new year. Thought i would try and make a short (6’0-6’2) rounded pin with the widepoint moved up a bit and a bit of extra width/ volume in the nose to get into the waves early. I’m toying with the type of fin setup to put on it, what made you go with the single and side fins??? I know its a classic setup but wouldn’t mind some info on the performance characteristics you are going for and the type of waves you are hoping to surf?

Had a chance to get in on them yet? How do they go?

hi ‘no pain’ [is that YOUR ?knee? in the avitar ??!!]

thanks HEAPS for asking …it’s always nice to get feedback !!

i like the ‘Widowmaker’ setup on my shortboards a LOT , and , on this one , because the fin box is too far forward for a thruster setup ,

i figured that ‘widowmaker’

and

single fin options this board will be !

because of the ‘spackle’ that thing filled the channels with , it’s already tail-heavy so … no ‘five fin options’ on THIS one , for a change !

in answer to your question …yes , it goes well !!

so far i have ridden it in small beachies

i’m hoping to ride it on a longer wave some time in the near future

having ridden a mal [9’4" ] on and off for the last few months , the paddling is the major challenge for me

it duck-dives UNREAL ,

it is loose with the vee, and it’s REALLY nice to be able to do roundhouses again !!

okay mate , i hope this HELPS ??

cheers !

 ben

here's the rocker , rails , and foil , so far...
