Frozen Shoulder

I have been out of the water for awhile for the second time in two years. First time it went away on it’s own in about 9 months. This time it was ten times worse and in my right shoulder. I have something called frozen shoulder. Really, really, really horrible pain if moved in a certain direction…especially paddling or getting your wallet. I just got a cortizone shot right in the joint which was not real fun either. We will see.

Any of you familiar with this??

I also had it back to back with Diverticulitus which made me eat mush for three weeks and helped add some extra weight I just lost. Sux.

Howzit solosurfer, Frozen shoulder is something diabetics can get from complications and I ahd it in 1 shoulder and it went away after some rehab. Then it hit the other shoulder and has never really gotten back to normal, I just live with it. Those cortizone shots can hurt for a day or 2 but they should help. Hope you get better, what does the doc say about the cause.Aloha,Kokua

Perfect condition other than the 20 pounds I must now re lose. Great heart, skin, blood pressure, flexibility and etc. No diabetes last blood test a few months ago. I was worried when a few years ago I bloated up to a Rock slider status. I could see myself on food for the great white special during that time.

Not sure if it would help but their are machines called power plates. I have a friend who is a pilates instructor and she has 2 of them… They vibrate and send frequencies through the body… I cant touch my toes but after standing on that puppy feel like I did 10 years ago… At least for a while…

Howzit solo, actually being to heavy is one reason some people get diabetes along with a lot of other reasons. In my case I lost over 25 lbs before I was diagnosed with it and when ever my sugars get out of control ( not since 2001) I would lose weight since my body wouldn't process food just pass it through my system and out the other end.Aloha,Kokua

I find it helps to stay active although it will be somewhat painful. Kokua is spot on it is a complication from diabetes. I have very little pain now but it can go from one shoulder to the other (GOOD TIMES).

Again this is what has worked for me.

1 keep my sugars under control (I am a type 1 diabetic)

2 Stay active. Yes I had to ride a ten footer for a while but I was still out there. Back to riding a six six that all of you helped me build!!!

3 Drink water like you are in a desert then drink more. My unprofessional opinion is that dehydration is a major cause.

Stay positive

One of my old friends I used to work with had an issue similar to this and instead of getting the cortazone shots he got saline injections (or something like that). He said that they seemed to last longer.

Keep at it. I myself have shoulder issues from sports back in highschool. If I don’t surf, do pushups, etc. they kill me. Seems the only thing that helps is keeping my shoulder muscles strong.

No, sorry to hear that, bro. I’m gonna put some prayer in the air for all the Swayfriends’ good health and surfability. I’d recommend KAL’s glucosamine+MSM, but that’s a standard recommendation for me for anything to do with your joints, man…

Power plates? I heard about 20 minutes of viberation a day keeping weight off somehow, but a fountain of youth? I’m gonna build one!

Hey Guys

I’m also a type 1 diabetic. Have been for about 12 years.

I hadn’t heard of this as a complication for diabetics.

I am forever having trouble with my left shoulder.

When I paddle out, I can barely get through the sets before I have to stop and rest because my shoulder feels like it is on fire.

I went to the doctor. All he said was that I strained it and gave me anti inflams.

Went to a physio. Couldn’t figure it out and gave me some generic shoulder exercises to do.

I keep myself fairly fit and active and keep my sugar levels fairly well controlled.

I can’t seem to get an accurate diognosis and nothing I do seems to help much.

I will be watching this disscusion closely for any more ideas.

Will look further into “frozen shoulder” in the mean time.

It’s real and it’s painful. I went the best for the diagnosis. Top of his class and specializes in shoulder issues. It goes away on it’s own in about a year. Mine was just so painful this time around…I had to do something. Still hurts and the damn shot in the joint is no fun.

I’ve been out for a while as well.

It started with broken rib that didn’t heal(complete separation…kept right on surfing on it)

Then I strained the tendons in my left elbow from overcompensating for the rib for so long.

Getting the shot in the elbow tomorrow. YIKES!

I’m all busted up.

When the doc said I had to stop surfing for a while to let the rib heal, I told him “A healed rib won’t do me any good if I blow my brains out!”

Then the elbow totally took me out of the game.

MAN! I NEED A WAVE!

adding myself to the busted and can’t surf for a while thread. Fell off my skateboard 2 weeks ago and fractured my collarbone. Currently in a strap which increases pain but should help keep things together while it heals. Skateboarding is a great sport but I am giving it up, I think my decision to stop at age 47 is a reasonable one.

get well everybody!

Mike

Skateboarding gave me tennis elbow and soccer knee. lol

“Training and rehabbing the throwing athlete’s shoulder” with Lisa Kearns.I bought this video online,it helped me tremendously.I had two retinal detachments, after the second one I had to lie facedown for two weeks,at least 23 hours a day,it completely messed up my shoulders(and my mind!).Her exercises got me going again, don’t know if I had frozen shoulder, but they were stuck, painful, and no strength in them. Now they are good again.Aloha

I’ve also been out of the water since July, but in my case is a partial tendon tear on the rotator cuff on my left shoulder, It happened at work, and has kept me out of the water ever since, I also got one of those cortisone shots three weeks ago, but unfortunately it didn’t helped at all, it was hurting more the first 3 days and then it was the same. I hope in your case it helped, and I do not know if you done any exercises, but since i was in physical therapy they had me doing pulls with a rubber band tight to a door knob, and that helped me.

I hope you feel better, and get back to the water soon, but also watch out, because if this things become chronic then you’ll have it for a while

this guy is the dose!

cortisone is naturally produced by our bodies when there is adequate

Pantothenic acid vitamin b-5.

cortisone injections have potential negative side effects, google that…

the ctsone quick fix was my dads solution in the 50’s

it is no longer the primary respected therapy.

stretch and strengthen is the waslaski treatment

he insists on excercise therapy

he can ''fix the frozen shoulder in ten minutes o the table doing muscle massage manipulating atrophied muscles into harmony

Do muscle work !

I´ve been with broken ribbons, legs, arms and bottom of my column.

I had also my left shoulder tooked out of place during 4 months and my recovery was made with weights (little ones - 2 pounds at the beginning and now easily with 25 pounds each arm)

Make a endurance training to make strong and resisting muscle.

the train must be at the beginning, 5 days a week and must be “easy”…

This training with a fisio help, make wonders…

if the pains began to stop the training, you can use a little “coktail” to avoid pain and still have efficiency: 2 aspirines half an hour before the training and 1 red bull with no sugar.

I also have trouble with my sugar and I had to lose 23 pounds, and some times when I´m tired and pains in my knees, for ex. I make that little coktail and I don´t have problems…

but each person is a different person…

also known as adhesive capsulitis. Try to get some PT to work on range of motion etc. If real severe, may require manipulation under anesthesia to break up adhesions or even surgical debridement

My arm feels better today. We will see about surfing this weekend.

I feel for ya, bro… 10 years ago I blew my right shoulder out gettiing 8’ of air upside down off a launch ramp while snowboarding. I lost my bearings and came down with my arm out to brace my fall. My 3 buddies had to take all my gear off and carry me to the first aid station. That was just before I moved to San Diego. Therefore, I got to spend the whole summer watching everyone else surf. The only thing that healed it was going to the chiropractor, getting hooked up to the muscle stimulator, drinking joint formula concoctions, and working through he scar tissue by paddling. After I healed that shoulder, I blew the left one out surfing a large winter swell at Beacons. I had just caught a nice wave, took it far inside, kicked out and began to paddle back out. I made it over two waves, and tried for a third but it took me backward. I didn’t want to lose the board over the reef (no leash), so I held on. My shoulder rotated backward in the socket and kept going back toward my back until it blew everything out. That one took a long time to heal. It was the same story though, Chiropractic, Muscle Stim., Joint formula, and paddling exercises mixed with a strength training circuit. Good luck… talk to Paul Chek, and buy the Laird Bio.
