Frustrated!!

I am having a heck of a time deciding what fin system to use on the stingray (side fins).

So If it’s obviuos and you know, damn it tell me!!

How is it decided what fin works best on what board?

I have been thinking of putting in FinsUnlimited boxes so I could make my own fins. But not really sure I want to go down that path right now. I just wanna finish her and ride her! Please, please , please no arbitrary responses, I’m desperate and in need of guidance.

Gary, you could use regular FCS plugs but instead of 2 use 3 to distribute the load of a bigger fish type fin. You can still make your own fins out of carbon fiber or fiberglass.

BTW, on the outrigger, I did a test on a piece of eps foam sprayed with scotch77 and then covered with crepe paper, afterwards I glassed it over with regular poly and it didnt melt.

First off i must say that none of my boards have fin systems other than longboaxes and glass ons. However, in my expirence of borrowing and fixing my mates boards i would recomend redx on all levels. Just go ride the thing, i wonder how it would ride without any fins? Darren

the 6 or 7" fins unlimited boxes will allow a couple of inches movement on your side fins , and give the option of single , twin , 2+1 , bonzer , thruster , quad setups . [With small bonzer runners with say a 4-5" base , and base back edge overhang , you can still get 3 " or so movement ]

…what MORE could you want ?!

Gary, get it finished already , or you’ll end up in a similar situation to me …got a new board to ride, and the ocean goes FLAT !!

Red-x, they are adjustable, durable and easy to install and to make your own after market fitting fin would be very easy.

Aquafiend, do you have any pics of ur STINGRAY in its current condition?

I’ll try to get some tommorrow. Right now the deck is primed and ready for paint but I haven’t primed the bottom as I have to get the fin thing situated.

darren what up…yea i like the redx fins i dont have the install system but the fins work well…i won them at big sur…that boards wway over my head did the gov. ask you to build it for them?

when i saw the board i thought single fin for sure. if you want, i can loan you the futures install kit if your going for just sidebiters. id do lokbox for bonzers as ive heard around the internet that red-x aint the best for bonzers.

there you go , your prayers have been answered Gary …

your own “swaylocks community get together” … just like you were talking about on that other post , another local you can surf with ! Who wants to help you out . And, ? perhaps even be there to film the long awaited launching of your stingray ? And you can reciprocate , I’m sure …all kinds of good stuff in your "shed ", eh ? …carbon fibre , water housing ideas , stingray plans , 13’ paddleboard , ? homemade fins ? [wish I could have a cruise through there myself , one day !!]

I’d say take Dave up on this offer …it’s good of him to help !

ben

what did Mike Eaton say / show you , regarding fins , just out of interest ? …did HE think it would make a good bonzer ?

I keep thinking of ZoSurf’s six fin option stubbie [the ‘S.O.S.’] every time I look at your “stingray” photo . The option of all those boxes would be great . As I said to Paul , I would start riding it as a single first . Then a twin , then three, etc …but that’s just me …do what YOU wanna do …

Where is Zosurf any ways? I sent him the template drawings. That guy is secretly cranking his stingray out and is gonna get it out before me.

…good for him …less posts on the computer = more time shaping and glassing …

Col Smith with channel vision, eh Chip? He wasn’t frustrated.

Yep , Greg , you got it !

I just watched ‘Fantasea’ again last night …hence the avatar .

[ …I bet his GLASSER was frustrated, though !! ]

…Says the man with 1886 post and counting, at an average of 8.3 per day? that must be some sort of record.

That’s Classic with a capital C coming from you mate, now go and finish that bonza?? ; )

(I’m trapped in work I have an excuse)

I agree about Lokbox. Steve Boehme at Infinity uses them as his V-cluster sidebites. That fin placement is so far outboard that the box is actually mounted in the curve of the rail so the fins get a lot of outward cant but are still placed vertical in their boxes. (I hope that makes sense.) The V-cluster uses larger outboard fins - 5" typically - and a small center trailer (3.5") placed with the leading edge even with the trailing edge of the side fins. And tons of vee with almost rounded concaves, its almost a bonzer, really, but with the fin sizes reversed. I’ve surfed a 10’ and an 8’ and they really do turn like the dickens. And if the Lokbox boxes hold up with that kind of placement, they must be good.

Minus the pin tail the board looked like a fish to me. I’ve been assuming you would do fish fins +/- a small trailer. If not going with big fish fins why not go with a system you have on other boards so you can use old fins to start with or be able to use the new fins on your other boards.
