funky delam

ok we’ve all seen some delams…well, the ones ive usually seen look like nothing untill you push on the soft spot, it pushes in then the glass takes its shape back for the most part…or if i let em go for a while then the glass might sink in a little, well ok…i have this one that seems to be getting worse quick, but the weird thing is its popping out…like a bulge as if its being inflated…its in a pressure spot, ofcourse …i have ideas on how to fix it, im just trying to figure out why its doing this?../ no paint on the board…not left in the sun or anywhere hot that i know of …ive just never seen one pop out like this, maybe i just havent seen enough? any idea?

air bubble in the glass job that no one took the time to fix?!? maybe???

thanks, but no thats not it.

maybe some water or something got on the blank in the spot before it was glassed? i dunno…i’m all out of ideas. that is a funky delam.

yeah. fffffffffunky.

if it is near the stringer is is probably a gassy blank, meaning that the blank is slowly releaseing gas due to a defect in the blank.

give it beano?

i do not know but i do know it looks really wierd.

The glass lost the bond to the foam. The foam gets smashed below the original level since the there’s no glass to reinforce it. Result: Foam + air space + unbonded glass that is now flexible. Air gets heated, space expands, glass bulges out. If there isn’t someplace for the expanding air to go, the delam expands and the glass goes down. You don’t really need to get the board very hot for this to start, it’s more of a temperature difference between the foam and glass. Fix it as soon as possible rather than contemplate it. IMHO, all delam repairs are temporary. I’ll fix it and then sell it, keeping it around is like watching a friend slowly dying.
