Fusion box fix

Let me start by saying I’m an idiot. Just finished my first board and surfed it the past two days in decent chest high waves.  5’9"/12"/19"/15", 2 3/8" thick, quad. I’m 6’0", 160 with monkey arms.   The board i normally ride is 5’6"/19 7/8 / 2 1/4.  First day it was super squirrelly so I swapped out the rear fins with an 80/20 pair with a little more surface area. It helped a little and was more stable.  The board still feels like its pushing water going down the line, lots of drag, hard to even pump it, but it turns really well.

So, I started to suspect there was something wrong with my fin placement. Rears 5" from tail, 1 5/8" from rail with 1/8" toe. Fronts 10 7/8" from tail, 1 1/8" from rail with 1/4" toe.  My other boards measure similar.  I went back and measured the fin placement again and discovered I screwd the pooch so to speak.  The front fins have 3/8" toe.  I believe this is the drag problem, but a second opinion is always good.

To fix, I was thinking of routing out the old boxes and patching with foam plugs then route holes for new boxes at correct toe angle. The other option I thought of was custom fins with a negative 1/8" toe.  Any other ideas, comments, ridicule, or mockery are greatly appreciated.

i would just make a new one. thats so much work. haha.

If you’re good with a router, you can rout out the hole for the new fusion box and leave the remnants of the old ones in place. Just have to take it slow and mulitple shallow cuts until the depth is right. If the rout is tight, the fix is hardly noticeable. Don’t ask how I know this…

go with Surfthis’s advice…

I had to reroute a box one time.

I suggest you freehand the route just inside of the old fusion box outline in 1/8" depth increments until you get to the full depth.

Then, put the jig down and route the full hole SLOWLY… if you try to use the jig and do a shallow route, you will run the blad into your jig.

Hope that makes sense.

…put 4WFS…

Quads are very difficult to get right. I agree with reverb 4WFS would be a good choise.

I had the same problem with my last board. But this board had 5 boxes.

I ended up riding it as a thruster instead of as a quad and it surfs great.

I would definately advice to also install a center box.

^haha 4wfs bit of a serious mod
As a test try it with with some twins in the rear boxed should give you an idea if the fronts are dragging. It wouldn’t be hard to tweak a set of fins to have 1/16th less toe by sanding back one side of the front and rear tabs then building up the oposite side with some solarres imo a lot easyer than new boxes patches hotcoat and sanding it in.

Thanks for the advice, but I don’t think I’ll be going with the 4WFS idea, although it would be fun to experiment.  The fact is, I’m poor, so I’ll probably go the cheapest route and buy two new boxes.  I still surf my other boards so I don’t want to destroy my fins.  Fins are expensive and I don’t want to buy more if I don’t have too.  By the way, has anyone seen the prices for a set of FCS 2 fins?  Advertised at $120 in Surfer mag.  That’s crazy. I’ll have to start making my own fins now too I’ll post pics of the surgery and subsequent scarring when done.
