If it’s just for small sidebites and you put lots of fiber over, I’d say inserts not required. The 4mm skin (balsa or hd foam?) will provide more support for side loads.
But if you’re running ‘‘normal’’ size fins it might be good insurance. If you hit the dirt with the fins and have a ‘‘push’’ load, you’d want to distribute that load over a bigger footprint than just the Fusion’s area. (in 1 lb)
silly would advise inserts regardless, you know. But he runs over dead sheep in the water and stuff.
ok, thanks MD!
it is going to be a McKee Quad thing
so my next question is then of course, how big of a footprint should it be for those push and side loading moments?
For best looks, i was thinking of adding 20mm to the outside of the Fusion Plug. So with a flush trim bit with top ball bearing adding 20mm extra Outline just by following the Fusion Plug. That would cut a little bit into the wood on the rail. But i don’t think that is so bad, since it’ll see plenty of corecell and epoxy/gf slurry going in too.
Any more feedback?
Thanks again!

dead sheep, rocks, other people pupes, shingle, electric barbed wire fences ( always a bit of excitement).
goats running off with boots down unscalable cliff faces. classic other day touched fence, no belt, grabed it with two and completed circuit or something equals new hairstyle
i put the inserts in regardless because i have a router template and precut inserts so it takes 5 minutes. it creates a water barrier as well
I would add more support.
We made a couple of 1lb EPS compsand 5 fin fish with just the fusion boxes. On the first day out I rode it as a quad and was having a great time, but after about an hour I noticed the board wasn’t feeling the same. After I came in and got home I noticed that the 2 front fin boxes pulled away from the foam and delaminated, so they were floating below the glass and foam.
We took the other boards and Oneula added a nice big dowel that goes through the top skin into the box and attaches the boxes to the top. Luckily that board wasn’t glassed yet. I still have to repair the one that broke. On the next boards, I told him that we should put the boxes under the skins. That will make them stronger and the board will look really nice with just the screw holes and the fin slots showing.
so there it is! 5 minutes with the router
use polyurethane if you have no dyvincell
Silly,
Show me your inserts you shafter !

its 20mm deep . i use a probox router bit and homemade template. i have precut strips. simply round off the corners and put them in . may use 5 min epoxy
hey silly
Isnt that board done yet??
wouter
yeah of course
Yeah!!
looks like some pretty tucked edge there?
how does it go?
such a difference with the plain wood and the epoxy on top, so much more deepness to it
another great one silly!
