Future boxes to low

OK guys you'll love this one. Shaper brings me a blank that he decided to install the future boxes in himself. Well the boxes are to deep and he resined them in already. The rail boxes aren't so deep that I can't work it out, but the center box is way to deep, so deep that the top of the box that usually gets ground off is below the level of the bottom. I have a couple of ideas but I would like to hear some of yours. I've never had any problems doing future installs but this guy has laid a real headache on me. Aloha, Kokua

let me guess… he routed the center box with the 3/4 right??? He didnt use the spacer??? but still put the 1/2 inch box in right right?

Also think about this… the fin probably wont fit right either since it is too deep the extra resin atop the box will be in the way of the fin… ID almost send it back and tell him to fix it… But if i were to fix it myself id see if its to deep for the fin to fit right first.

otherwise id glass it like normal worst case scenario you may have to use a drill a few times to get into the glass then you should just be able to trim it with a blade??? right right?

Firstly, thoroughly beat the guy for the oversight; you’ll feel better, hee hee. One fix would be to stick a 1/4" thick piece of (plastic/foam/wax) into the fin slot of the rear future box and do a back fill with Q-Cel flush with the bottom of the board. Pull out the piece in the slot and carefully tape out the “new” slot. Glass the board. The down side of this is that the Future boxes depend largely upon a good mechanical bond with the lamination. If the gap you have to fill is too thick, say 1/8", then you might have problems. Proper solution: take it back to the shaper who did this; he should gladly fix it. The best and hardest way to fix it is to route out the old box, fill the hole with very fluffy Q-Cel, and re-sink the Future box to the proper depth. Best of luck…

Just glass over it as normal and cut out the slot with a sharp utility knife instead of grining off the top of the box. Just the way it’s done with the surftechs I believe altough they propably grind the box flush before they lam. You might have to use alot of resin to even out the box when hotcoating tho.

tell him to come in and shape some concave into the tail ,

Kokua — Those are all are all potentially good fixes. I only say potentially because of the amount of aloha and plain old patience required. Self preservation instict tells me that if you opt for removing the box, let him do it. McDing

Howzit surflab, No he used the spacer for the 1/2 box. What is strange is I set his system up for him sunday and did 2 tests to make sure eveything worked right and it did. The thing I scolded him about was why did he set the boxes even though he knew they were to deep, I could have floated them. He has a history of screwing things like this up because he doesn't stop and think, he's one of those people who leaps before he looks. What I am thinking is to tape off the slot and scew hole and fill with milled fibers for strength and when the board is ready to sand I use a dremel and cut carefully through to the box. Unfortunatally the fin will set deeper than it should but I'm sure I can make it work. I'm going to call the reps. on Maui this morning to get some input from them since I'm sure this isn't the first time this has happened. Thanks for the responses, and actually Bert's idea sounds like a good one. I think I'll go give the guy a couple of slaps and see if that helps jump start his brain matter. Aloha, Kokua

if you fix it he will do it again and worse the next time…if he fixes it he will learn and likely never ever do that one again…your fcs process is so set up wow what an energy burn … to have to 'life guard a fin box system thats not your kuleana…blessings…ambrose…nice trade winds

Howzit Brother Brose, I fixed it already, but I hear what you’re saying. I went over yesterday and checked the router I set up and things were different, I told him to leave the settings the way I set them or else. You know I don’t do his boards unless it’s a friend who just happens to have him do the shape and this is a board for Bags and I always do Bags boards. Aloha, Kokua
