Ordered some Futures for a 6’2" I just shaped… they’re not delivered yet but since I havn’t done this before I’m reading the on-line install directions and feeling kinda dumb. Am I getting this right…?? mark out placement on blank rout fin box holes in foam to depth/length set boxes in blank with resin, chopped fibers, cabosil, etc. lam patches (oblong, football-shaped?) over boxes (tape off box screw hole, and fin slot first) lam board over patches Trim, grind-out glass over slot/screw hole tape off box, hotcoat, sand. Seems like too much burying the box to me but I don’t know… is this right? Thanks in advance, Eric

Just set the boxes with lam. resin. You should tape off the foam before you set the boxes to keep excess resin off the blank. I wait to put the reinforcement patches after the deck is lamed and hot coated.Hope this helps. Aloha, Kokua
Thanks Kokua. it would seem easier to keep bubbles out of the layers if the reinforcement patches are put on top of the Lam… though the instructions say to put them under the lam… and seems like it might be stronger with them on top too. Still seems like a lot of glass to grind away to get to the box slot after lam… Maybe I’m still getting this wrong - do the reinforcement patches go over the whole box or just on the edge/lip of the box? Or - slap the patchs over the whole thing and trim it back with a razor before the glass goes off completely? Sorry for being dense - but I’m trying (for a change) to do it right the first time. EJ Cut the glass so it covers the whole box and the some. You can slit the glass patch so it lays down flat. Don’t worry about trimming the glass because you’ll sand it off after the hot coat. Aloha, Kokua
Got it. Thanks for the help - and I’m glad I asked too. router is ready… now all I need are the boxes to show up at the door>>> Cut the glass so it covers the whole box and the some. If I shape a board, and want to take it to a glass shop and not glass it myself, would the glass shop install the fin boxes/plugs for me? How complete should the board be before I take it to get glassed?
If I shape a board, and want to take it to a glass shop and not glass it > myself, would the glass shop install the fin boxes/plugs for me? How > complete should the board be before I take it to get glassed? Go to a reputable glasser and they should be able to do the installation. Hopefully they will have the fin set ups already. This way it should be less expensive ( they buy them wholesale) than if you purchase them at a retail price which could be twice as much. A totally finished shaped blank is all they need unless you want something extra that they don’t have. Aloha, Kokua
