futures cant change

I have some futures laying around and want to change the cant of the fin to 0 degrees. these are made out of glass and that honeycomb cell core. I was thinking of cutting off the base, and reattaching it with a new 0 degree cant. I guess my question is… how does the factory set the original cant to the fin? are the base and fin 2 separate pieces or are they layed up somehow as one?

thnaks, adam

I change the cant on a extra set of composite solid base quad rears by cutting the out side of the base off perpendicular to the fin (0°) with a tablesaw and epoxing a wedged shaped sliver of cutting board material to the opposite side. Then shaped the new piece to match the cutouts at the ends, a bit of sanding to fit the box tightly and they worked. Since the fin is held by the ends it just needs to fit the box tightly to prevent wobble.

thanks,

 I’ll give 'er a try

Damn… by the subject title I was hoping this thread would have something to do with a Delorian

Do really want to do this? I’m guessing to use a side fin as a center?  I can’t see myself ever doing this but If I had to … I think I’d rather route out the box with the jig and sink a new one, tipped with the desired 0 cant using the side fin. Seems about the same amount of work but much less likely to break off.

bud,

yeah, I do…it is on a convex bottom, rail fins, and i want 0 degrees for the final cant. if i re route and tilt the box to compensate for the fin’s cant, I have a feeling the side of the box closest to stringer will be way to deep. so deep that I could not even sand open the  box after glassing. weird situation, but I’m in the process of going with dukdiv’s method. i’ll let you know how it goes

Dukdiv called it. It is easier to just grind down the high side and make it flat, then add some glass to the other side. Sand to fit the box.

I had to do this on a six channel board I built for myself. After I shaped the channels. The angle was too much with Future boxes. Even after tilting the boxes over, the cant was way too much. 0 degrees made the fin cant correct.
good Luck. Barry Snyder
