I know you are supposed to laminate right over a futures box, but I was wondering if you could laminate with out the boxes cutout and then cut them out after the laminate has dried and use some football patches over the box instead. thanks Josh
why exactly would you want to do that? sounds like more work to me.
not the way to do it. Laminating over them is the whole purpose to their design
Why are Future Fin users always so goofy?
Hey guys The reason I asked is because i have a shaped blank and I am going to my brothers this weekend in the panhandle and my set of futures are up there. I am scared to transport the blank up there because of it getting chipped or dinged so i thought i might laminate it before i go just to give it some more structural integrity and then install the futures up there. And yes i am goofy thanks
I’ve had to do the boxes after glassing with no problems; aside from the extra work. The other guys are right, it is ideally designed to go into the shaped blank laminating. I had to do a resin color job where the customer wanted to have the boxes show cleanly (dark blue translucent tint in the lam). I put them in afterwards then followed up with footballs using clear resin. Try sanding the raised part of the box down a bit before installing to allow the glass patches lie down easier (thanks Canuk). The reduced lip will still let you sand through to it to open the fin slot and grub screw hole. Looks like the circumstances dictate the extra work; you’d be sooo bummed with a smashed up blank and a couple of extra wingers in the nose… —“now how much will you pay?”
