G and S, and Bing ?

Someone claimed (on another forum) that Bing was owned by Gordon and Smith in the mid 70s. I never heard this before and it sounds odd, to me. Can someone clarify? Prove/disprove?

Mr Copeland, are you out there?

Never happened.

ps: word in the day was boards were built on ''contract'' by G&S,  licensed, as Bing points out.

Not owned, but licensed.

In mid 1974 I licensed the Bing production to Larry Gordon. and I moved to Idaho.  Mike Eaton and several of my factory employees moved to San Diego to build the Bing models.  That lasted for 10 years (or so) until Mike moved the Bing’s to his own shop in San Diego.  Then in 2000 Mike handed it over to Matt Calvani and the rest is history.  Actually it’s all history and it’s all included in our book.

Well, about an hour after I asked the question here, I was looking through an old mag for something else and found a Bing ad. Here’s the ad, and a detail from it. Note the address is the same as G and S Surfboards. 5465 Gaines St, SD.

Ad is from July '76.

I guess I was uploading the scans at the same time you were replying. Thanks, Bing.

Wow Sammy,  I thought that I had found every Bing ad there was when I was scanning for my book but I never found that one.  Any chance you could scan it at 300 dpi and email it to me?  “bcsur@sunvalley.net”.

Thanks,

Bing

Sure thing, Bing. I have a near complete set of Surfer Mag from '62 to 1990. The only issues I don’t have are the four published in '61. Anything else you might want?

Thanks Sammy,  I think that’s the only one I’m lacking.

I am a newbie to this forum and rarely post but i think it is absolutely amazing that amateur shapers can be in contact with legends such as Bing himself.

That is a really cool part of Swaylocks. But trust me when I say, you and I, are the only amateur shapers on this thread.
