I have had this board for 15 years and never used it. Got it as a trade in. I have wanted to ride it forever and think it would fit in to my riding style perfectly. Problem is I don’t want to ruin a beautiful board in perfect condition. I don’t want to put a leash on it and am sure I would loose it to the rocks on occasion. Question is should I rip it or hang it?
What type of fin is on it? Looks like Guidance Systems, but the pic is too blurry to tell. Does it have a set of small plastic caps in the channel in front of and behind the fin? How about a good clear pic of the fin and box?
It’s a waveset fin. Nice one. with no scratches or bottom contact. It has a hole in it with a grommett. I think that was to put a leash on back in the day maybe?
I can't see the board in the photos...Maybe Huck can help you with that.
Surfboards are made to surf...cars are made to drive....Sit and stare at it or ride it?
What's it worth??? 2 grand max....I know guys that drive around in $150,000 cars because they can...maybe you need a better leash. How much is you car worth? Are you afraid to drive your $10,000 car because a bird might poop on it?......oh my....buy insurance.
....and.....what if it's a mass produced G&S surfboard.......What's stopping you from making a copy..........maybe it's a GSI surfboard.....surfing is for fun....
Then, you’re lucky it even has a fin. That design was the worst ever when it came to lost fins.
Even though that photo is really blurry, I knew it wasn’t a WAVESET. The caps in the channel were the indicator.
Yup. That scan was uploaded by myself, I’m pretty sure.
The fact that it has a Guidance fin places it squarely in 1969. Very nice score. Ride it, but don’t put a leash on the fin. Do a bridge or stick-on attachment if you must wear a leash.
Rip the crap out of that thing! You could also use one of the O’fish’l or E-Z stick on leash plugs. I’ve sold a bunch to guys over the years and they’ve had great success. That’s a really nice board that should be ridden.
What’s up Nxn? That boards pretty clean and probably looks great on the wall. If you decide to surf it the E-Z Plug is the way to go. They’re easy to put on and work awesome. We have them if you need one http://www.foamez.com/ez-stickon-plug-p-614.html .
They sent me a Magic with a Guidance System around the end of the summer in '69. By the time I got back to San Diego in September, Larry was already experimenting with his fiberglass fin and box system.
And he was testing his new model The Gypsy which had an “arc tail” and which would become the Gypsy Ryder, then the Little Gypsy and then the Super Gypsy.
The “coat of arms” decal on your Magic makes it part of the original Magic design but the Guidance System fin set up would put it in a later vintage. Also, I will bet it’s a little narrower than the first run (21"). Actually the Magic evolved quite a bit from the first ones in the late summer, fall of '68. The original design was the brainchild of G&S shaper and hot surfter Dennis Benadum who made one for his end of the season trip to Mexico. Pretty sure he named it too.
The first ones had thick tails. They were thinned out later as the rail design evolved too. Also rocker was added to the nose in the later editions.
When we came out with the Gypsy and decided to update the Magic it was about the same time Larry and I went to see “Easy Rider”. We decided then to add “ryder” to all the models and add the “Easy Ryder” to the line up.
The Guidance System was short lived. It was designed by several of the major manufacturers so they didn’t have to buy fin systems from a competitor: Bahne or Pope.
The manufacturers each had a fin design in the WAVE set stable but the biggest selling one was the G&S Hy Performance fin. They didn’t like having to put “G&S” fins on their boards. And then they realized that the new system was still called GS. It was pretty funny.
Of course Larry’s fiberglass fin system was abandoned when Bahne started making a similar system with interchangeability.
Went with Resinhead’s advice, rip it and hang it. Took it out in some good beach break waves. It was fun but I really want to take it out when the local point is working. The fin stayed in but two of the pieces that fill the box fell out. Any tips on how to keep them in so I dont loose them next sesh?? Thanks for the coments and history of the board
