Hi, I could use some help finding a material. I’m looking for G10/garolite epoxy sheet. Specifically, G10 sheet with pigment added to the middle layers to give a 2 color lamination. The second color is just in the very center few layers. This is material many fin makers use for their G10 fins because the different color material in the center of the lay up makes a center reference line while grinding the fin. I’ve been searching on the web for this material but with no luck. If anyone knows where to find it I would appreciate the help. Eric Nelson
make it your self…22 to 25 layers of 6 oz minimum lay up 10 layers then do 2 layers of any colour then the other 10 layers for best results filler coat and sand between layers or else the layers will bleed into one another and you lose your nice clean lines when the fin gets foiled… regards BERT
Eric, G10 is widely used, a very hard, dense laminate used for circuit boards, gunstocks, knife handles, etc… also surfboard and sailboard fins. You cant make your own, as better quality G10
s composition is proprietary… cured under high pressure and temperature. G10 is an electrical/mechanical grade of glass cloth laminate cured with a nonbrominated epoxy resin. It has high flexural, impact and bond strength at room temperatures and retains good electrical properties under dry and humid conditions. Commonly available in thin sheets up to about 1/4", often through custom knife building suppliers. They might know where to purchase thicker stock. I`ve never seen it sold in 1/2"+ thick sheets. http://www.kovalknives.com/Handle02.htm#carbon http://ajh-knives.com/laminat.html http://www.blackg10.com/
If your in Orange County…try Vanderveer Industrial Plastics…(714)579-7700 If not, try Mcmaster-Carr.com…they’ll have it.
Thanks guys. I know how the G10 circuit board material is made. I’m sure I could bond two pieces together with another color pigment added to the resin while glassing the pieces together. Before bonding I’d probably sand the each G10 sheet a bit to promote bonding. Than I might just use carbon for a black layer in the center of the sheets. When doing this type of lamination it’s preferable to use a powerful press to push the sheets together. I know of at least one fin company that buys the stuff aready laminated and ready to go. Where do you suppose they are getting it? I could probably ask them but they might take offence. I’ve searched rather extensively on the web. I need some first hand information from someone. McMaster is the first place I looked. They have one color G10 sheets in several colors but I would have to bond them together myself. I would prefer not to do that because I know they are available in multi-color straight from the manufacturer. I might be a special order, but from where? If I don’t find the material with the different color sheets pre-laminated together I can always laminate them myself. Did you guys understand my original question? Eric Nelson
well there you go …thank you swaylocks…learning continues… regards BERT
