Galssing problems

I’m brand new, first board and I hate to do this to everyone, but I’ve checked the archives quickly and I only have limited access to the internet right now and I’m in the middle of a project so your help would be greatly appreciated. I’ve just finished bottom (6oz) and top (2x6oz) lam layers and need to know if i can sand down bubbles, ruff spots and messes before I go on to do the sanding coat? Do I need to worry about cloth thickness if I sand down? Does the lam coat have to be completely dry (to tack at all) before I put on next coat- I think I read about this archives-said some tackiness is okay. And finially my lam coat wasn’t really even, in some spots its completely smooth and in others you can see the weave of the fabric, is this okay or is the lam too thin? (its not dry, but you can see/feel the texture of the cloth) Thanks so much for anyhelp, I looked everywhere for the glassing 101 video-couldn’t find it so just went with Surfing essential book. I’m gonna love building boards.

You should see the weave of the cloth, and tackiness is fine because that is what lam resin should be so the hot coat will adhere. You can sand down the high spots, but it will gum up the sandpaper and cut through the cloth. A 4" grinder with a sanding disk will gum up less. You may have to put small patches of new cloth on the sand-throughs. The hotcoat will even things out quite a bit. Doug

a good lam will show the weave of the fabric and be fully wetted out. pools of resin over the weave is something you should try to avoid. hotcoat should help even it all out.

Aloha, It’s good to hear from someone who is new and stoked . I’m new too. 2 boards so far . Well the 2nd one isn’t finished yet.

I think that the lam coat should be sorta dry/rough looking when done . The Idea is to get enough resin to really have a good bond with the blank. But to use your squeegee to pull the excess out. To cut down on the weight? Both of mine came out like you describing . Dry/rough in some areas and shiny/"wet" looking in others.

I am only going to sand a few areas where it is especially thick and the lap edge… The Hotcoat will smooth it out a lot and then sanding afterwards will make it even better.

Just try not to sand too much into the cloth especially on the bottom where it is only 1 layer. And you can always add a little patch if you have to … I did. On the Fish Tail… Hope you have fun and get the satisfaction out of this that I do … Mahalo to all… D.J.
