Gerry Lopez - Lightning Bolt

So do you all think this board is a Hansen shaped lightning bolt from the mainland? A Gerry Lopez shaped by Hansen?

No.  There is no HANSEN  decal on the board.    Believe me, Don made sure every board that left the shop was ''branded.''

Most likely its a fake Gerry Lopez from the 70s era? from the Mainland?

Almost one hundred percent sure that this board was not made by Hansen. When Gerry was first with Hansen, I believe his boards had the Hansen "oval" laminate. About the time Gerry and Jack left Surfline Hawaii and started up Lightning Bolt, the Hansen laminates had changed to just letters saying "Hansen". When Bolt started, Hansen even had T-shirts made saying "Hansen" with "Lightning Bolt Surf Co." beneath it.

Hi Bill

It's been far too long...Trine almost ready to relinquish number three...only 7 weeks to go...I'm currently recovering from an arthroscopy - cartilage tear cut out of ...my right knee 5 weeks ago but managing to surf a little...been doing a few boards but a nesting wife and busy work has slowed progress....each board looking better by the day though...I'd perhaps be interested in one of the boards you mentioned if they've not already been snapped up. Been thinking about a variation on the 6'6" fish broomtail fish template you sent me some years ago will keep you posted on how it turns out...

Cheers

Richard

Hope you and peggy are keeping well.

Bill,

I think that I began riding Bolts with boards about the 7'00 length. During my days of riding Bolts, the length of my boards varied from 6'4"'s up to 8'00" (my North Shore boards, and in those day's, an eight foot gun was considered big, with most running in the 7'6" to 7'10" range).

No longboard's at all in those days. Did not see any Bolt longboards until Angulo shaped some.

The Hansen “Bolts” were done for a very brief period, and coincided with their use of the hollow “Stratoglas” construction for a time. Rather than a seperate label, per se, it was a specific model produced while Lopez was a team rider.

So, I’m in agreement with Puamana and Thrailkill that this board here is in no way connected to Hansen.

here’s an ad scan from Hansen when they were doing the Lopez model. Note very visible Hansen lam.

Coincidentally, PPK just posted a story about a neighbor who’s leaving Kaui and happened to show him a board he’s had since it was new. An Angulo Bolt.

Jim Devlin added to PPK’s thread about that Bolt, and showed a few of his own. Far right looks like a Barnfield lam, and the one on the left might have an Angulo lam down near the tail.

You can really see the difference in these pics… the bolt logo is much more angled than the board that i have…

Yes. The one on your board is really crude compared to the authentic ones shown. That’s why I said it didn’t look right, to me. Keep in mind that the “Bolt” label was a very popular one at a certain time. I would not be surprised if there were some counterfeits produced.

Bill Hixon and I had a factory in Atlantic Beach Fla. in the early 70’s. I was shaping and glossing. We did a lot of resin lighting bolts on boards back then. I used to do an India ink line around the perimeter of the bolt. We were not trying to fake anyone out…we considered the bolt just another graphic design much like the Sam Cody arrow. It was (and still is) a great design.  Other factories in central Florida were doing the same thing. I think i saw a few Tomb&Reeves or MTB’s with the resin bolt. I also did some resin bolts for Chapman Turner.

Around 1975, or so, Gary Propper had a shop/label called Lightning Bolt East. All of the boards had a bolt on them which was very similar to the original/genuine Bolt, as I recall.

Howzit Sammy, I haven't checked PPK's post but I think he is referring to me since I talked to him last night and asked if he knew I was leaving Kauai and he said yes. He asked if there was a going away party planned and I told him not to my knowledge and he was going to see about getting something together. Going to look for the post next.Aloha,Kokua

on the bolt note:

recently saw this

http://www.lightningbolt.eu.com/

I was unaware there was still bolts in action…

slightly off topic, anyone have any info (pics??) on the early sailboards from Bolt (or Ed Angulo for that matter) ? I have been drawing up some plans to shape a sailboard from an old clark windsurf blank I got last year and well, its an old balnk so it will require a slightly older shape in terms of rocker and outline.

I’m pretty sure PPK referred to a guy named David who is part of his K9 crew. Said the guy was moving to Oahu and renting out the house he owns on Kaui. The Angulo Bolt in the pictures belongs to this “David” guy.

Howzit Sammy,Not Me and David doesn't ring a bell. I will see Peter in the next week or so and get some more info since I am curious, David must be going for work. that is another sad story on Kauai these days.Aloha,Kokua

Yes, Pete said many folks he knows are leaving Kaui because of work shortages. I’m seeing the same problems where I am. Lots of old time residents packing up to find work elsewhere.

Howzit Sammy, In my case it is more family than work. My brother is not doing well and needs help around a house e both own.which is the main reason so I actually will better off there ( no Rent with a semi fixed income that gets better whe SS kicks in in 2 months). So I owe him and need to learn the businesses plus could use some kind of change after cancer. Am looking at it as a new adventure and have some different kind of fun.Aloha,Kokua

Angulo was one of the Bolt shapers … I thought his stuff was as good as anybody’s.  Parrish did some great stuff too. Barnfield too.
