Gettin' back into shaping

“Retro Geezers.”

“Don’t Trip on that Planer Cord.”

We may have just found our T-shirt logo for the 2004 Swayholics Anonymous get together… front & back, all from one post.

Thanks, Cleanlines!!!

Gene,

I remember your shop/factory on Bridge Ave. in Point Plesant. Passed it every day on the way to my friends house. He bought a board from you back in '70 or '71. Even with all of the development in the area the building is still there. Keep the stoke going.

Hey Scott, I looked at the 7’10"R and you’re right. That looks like a better blank for the kind of board I want (and the place in Pt. Harbor has them). Thanks, Gene

Kieth, You ain’t just a kiddin’. This is a great place to hang out. I never thought I’d get such a reception. You guys are amazing…

Thanks,

Gene

Spence, As you can see by my post to Scott, I’m going for the 7’10"R. Thanks for the advise

Hey Greg, How ya doing? Believe it or not, I remember making that board for you. Glad it turned out to be a winner. What do you mean “You didn’t know I was still alive?” But then, thinking back to those days (or is it daze) I guess it is amazing that I lived through it. Remember, that old shapers never die - they just develop a blank stare…

Thanks, Gene

You can get blanks from Tim Nolte, his shop is on highway 158 on the way to nags head, ive heard hes good people and will hook you up, he has a link to his website on the opening page to swaylocks under the “latest resource additions” heading. Good luck bro, its really inspiring to hear the old pro’s get all stoked and nostalgic man!

Thanks Rob, I went to Nolte’s web site but didn’t see anything about blanks. It was kinda limited in content. I’m going to be in Rodanthe the 1st week in May so I’ll stop by his shop and see what he’s got.

Gene

Gene, I’m stoked for you! Cant wait to hear about your first surf on your new board.

Try giving him a call. 252-491-2590(nc number) or 757-679-6621(va number)

Thanks for the phone numbers Rob. I’ll give him a call tomorrow to see what they have in stock. I’m looking to pick up everything (blanks, resin, glass - the works) when I’m in Rodanthe. I’m really stoked about getting involved with all you guys. Your help and encouragement is just unbelieveable!! Since I stumbled on to this site and got “that feeling” again, I’ve been neglecting my work and having a hard time sleeping. (Spending too much time on Swaylocks, I guess) Even though I haven’t started my board yet, my wife sez she already feels like a surfing widow.

See ya, Gene

Gene - Uh oh. It’s not too late to turn back. If it gets too deep, head out to Big Sur in September for the support group meeting.

Hi Gene,  It's Gary  I worked with you at deGroot & Mason as your glasser with Dean Ward as the sander.  I was 17ish back then.  I also googled and found this, but it seems to be about 6 years old.  I am glad to see that we are still alive and well.  I hope that you fulfilled your dream and made that board and got back in the water.  I also have that reoccurring dream, the smell of the resin etc.  I've thought about doing some boards on a small basis when I retire in a couple years.  I'm still in NJ 4 kids, 4 grandkids..  Go figure.

I googled Rible surfboards yesterday, which was entertaining.  I started with Bob Rible at 14 in ding repair, worked with Jimmy Phillips who showed me some shaping, and did the whole boards when he bolted for greener pastures, before deGroot & Mason.  Those were great times.  I hope you are still well.  Gary  (robbins4shore@gmail.com)

Haha!  Good to see this old thread come back.  Hopefully the O.P. will drop by to give us a progress report!

Hey Gary,

Where on the Jersey Shore do you live, I grew up in Manasquan now I live in Wall, you are welcome to come by my shop and get your feet wet again,

Hi Roach   Yeah that would be one of the boards we did '68-'70ish in Pt Pleasant NJ.  Sadly, Gene hasn't posted in about 6 years.  I never heard from him after reaching out here.  Gary
