getting a 5'10 small wave board

Hi. I’m about get a summer board for small and weak waves. I dont like the 6’3 pihrana fish I have now, way to big. I wanna go as small as possible but keep the thruster shortboard feel. I’m 5’9, 150 pounds riding a 6’2"x18.5x2"1/8 shortboard. I’m guessing here, thinking about a thruster, 5’10 x 19" [12.2 x 15.2] x 2.25 No wings, round squash, low rocker, low rails(?) and a shallow single/double. Anyone wanna help out with the dimensions? It’s gonna go trough a mate overseas and I won’t have direct contact with the shaper (yeah I know…) thanks hope ya not tired of these type of Q’s!

Joe I am nearly the same size as you, and my summer fishes are 1" wider than my standard 6’2" shortboard, the rocker is a lot flatter, width is carried out to the rails more (i.e. no dome deck), and I am riding a swallow with no wings, but the tail is pulled in quite a bit. Maybe something like: 5’10" x 19.25" x 2.25" I would recommend going as wide as you are comfortable with, as you are going to need planing surface area somehow to generate speed in small, gutless waves. Have fun!

I think Kit’s idea is right on. If you want a little more bite in the tail you cant turn the squash tail into a swallow and change the bottom configuration a little to accomodate the tail change. You’ll loose a slight amount of lift, but board won’t track as much. It’s all a matter of styles. Mahalo, Rich

Thanks alot, gonna go for 19.25" and the squash tail for max lift… Any idea’s if the (guessing again)12.2 x 15.2 is ok width for nose and tail, or will the outline and rails in general have more to say here? tnx again hj

H.J. The nose measurement sounds fine. The tail measurement sounds too wide if you want to keep any curve in the outline where you stand on the board. I think you need to draw it in some IMHO. Rich

Who is going to shape your board??? I ordered one once from Australia, sent money and …and…NADA! That was well over a year ago and still nothing! Find a shaper close to you and work with him! Do not use “Seajuice” or “Global Surf Tech” Getting burned by this co. is what got me started shaping in the first place. The only GOOD thing that has come from it. If you are in Australia contact KR who posts here or Dave Verral who also posts here. Reputable people! Krokus

Hey don’t worry krokus, the board is shaped by a mate of a mates mate, the board is paid on pickup
