I’m not poor but there’s no money in my pocket…The money I make from my real JOB goes to support my family… …Sometimes the money I make “on the side” goes to the family…sometimes it goes to surfboards!
People need to think about getting together to buy in Bulk. MarkSSD and I got together about a year ago and bought a roll of 6oz cloth. The price per yard was was almost 1/2 what I was paying retail…That roll is gone…Good times!
Today I got paid for some repair work. I went to Finish Master in Vista, Ca. and bought one case of 32 oz. PPG mixing cups and one case of 8 oz. cups…100 cups per case…If you need mixing cups let me Know…I’m in North County…
This subject has been brought up before…Post your location…network with people in your area…build boards…
I’m going to need 6oz cloth around the end of April…I may or may not have cash at that time…I have a supplier with a good price…
Ray, wish I was closer. I could deffinitely do with the reduction in chemical costs, I bet the saving in haz-mat delivery costs would be huge as well.
Anybody think that maybe a surf supplies co-operative for the areas where there is a high concentration of builders might be a good idea. I would deffinitely be into that if I wasn’t the only person making boards for 200 miles.
Excelent post Ray. I mostly buy in bulk and I moslty buy industrial materials. I try to steer clear of the “surf industry” if I can. I think I’m getting a pretty good deal most of the time.
Reality check - A friend of mine worked for a large boat building outfit - he got me a 100M roll of 6oz glass for free cause the sales rep liked him. If you’re buying by the ton 100M is nothing. The same guy passed on to me several epoxy “samples”.
I’m pretty stocked up for the moment and my boards seem like they’re for free but we should all be buying co-operatively.
hey Ray great minds think alike - resinhead wanted 1/3 roll of 6 oz and I don’t mind stocking up so we’re buying a whole roll. If you want 1/3 share no problema… just save a core to reroll it on and we’re in business.
I always buy in bulk and typically have glass (5 partial or full rolls at the moment) so call me up anytime. Also carbon tow, 233 tape, glass on fins, etc etc. If you have nothing else to trade (seems unlikely) there is always the universal currency (BEER).
yo…Fiberglass Services in Gardena has some top secret uber discounted paper in the back.
FIVE DOLLARS for a 100 count pack of some eastern european stuff that works pretty good considering it’s only a nickel a sheet…their production customers didn’t like it so they are just trying to liquidate.
can bring some down next time if you’re interested…not availble in all grits, but most of the key ones.
Tyler- Next question: what quantities are you looking to sell? Min? Max?
I took the EVS system out to our shaping room in Vegas, all the parts did not arrive before I left and I’ve been too busy here in LA. We’ve got some sup’s to do so I’ll have to get out there soon.
I’ll take the 1/3 roll of 6oz and it will give me an excuse to come down to SD…I even have a core to roll it onto. I’m glassing a board for a Swaylock’s member in April and the money from that job is going to be used for cloth.
Mahana and Slashzilla ,
I will not be attending the AB3. I want to go but I have to work that day. I get off work at 4:30pm. Sunday’s job is about 5 miles from the Harbor if you want to meet late in the day… I have a feeling you will be on Surfboard over load by then. 32oz. cups are 34 cents , 8oz.cups are 23 cents… I have 50 of each size that I’m willing to part with… Somebody posted on another thread that he was paying close to one dollar per mixing cup…we need a Bro deal!!!
Hey bud…just a tip on that note…hope I’m not out of line
Get a $20 postal scale and mix by weight. I know Epoxy is one of the easiest to mix…but going by weight will insure that you ALWAYS have good mix ratios and you will waste FAR less resin.
Hey Ray - just got a new roll of 6 oz so you got dibs on 1/3 of it if you want… going camping in the desert this week though so let’s get together after the 10th. We can trade for mixing cups or whatever if you wanna… even got your choice of widths & cloth type, eh!
PS one of my brothers bailed on the trip so if anyone wants to fill the extra campsite at Joshua Tree on Mon 4/6 -Thursday 4/9 (Indian Cove campground), send me a PM soon… tent site only, no RV/trailer (no popouts, ha ha, see it’s surf related!)
