Giant surf in Hawaii?

well the forecast for today/tomorrow was that a massive swell is supposed to hit the North Shore. Up to 40 foot surf on the outer reefs possible… Bill B, Robin, Kokua - any signs of it? Looks like Sunset is pretty big and Waimea is crowded… so I guess there must be something starting? but it’s only supposed to last a day or two…

Trying to decide what board to bring over on Friday, this type of forecast makes the decision really hard…

Just got off the cell phone with my buddy. He was telling me that the Lifeguards are picking up a group of guys outside Lani’s with the ski.

Aloha Keith

Was about 2’ with stong SE offshores when I came to work about noon. I have been in the shop all day so I didn’t know it had come up. DARN!! Classic North Shore, Zero to huge in a few hours! I love this place.

Got a bunch of calls starting around 2:00pm. One was about a certain spot we frequent was going off the richter perfection and to get my ass down there RIGHT NOW!!! 10 minutes later it was WHOA! Never mind its completely CLOSED OUT!!! Came up super fast and looking at the buoys it may be short lived and peak in the dark… Haleiwa is connecting to Avalanche which means BIG with Christian Budroe and Joey Sadoy paddling into the crazy bombs while guys are towing the outer reefs before dark… Yep… Classic North Shore step ladder sets…

yup… the no.1 buoy just went richter, straight up to about 24 feet, mid afternoon. only in Hawaii…

I got the call yesterday from Dan Herlihy, he is who I have built the 17 wood board reproductions for.

This is what he has been waiting for, the swell to put the Quigg replicas to their paces.

Bonga and the boys are ready to try the 10’8" squash Buzzy Trent design and the Joe Quigg pintail that was light years ahead if the curve.

Tom Curren rode the chambered 9’ “Auggie” and the Guigg eggs last week.

Ah, friday, I’ll be there, yeah!!!

Aloha Keith:

I just went down to the ocean and took a look [time: 7:27 a.m. Wednesday] and it has already dropped a lot from last night, saw some maybe six foot faces out at Hanalei but the conditions are pretty messed up due to the south west winds that came in with the storm. Raining and cold!

So it seems like it is dropping fast unless there is more to come. Looking at the forecast it is showing a steady decline through th end of the week with continuing messed up conditions due to bad winds which are going to slowly swing through to north by the end of the week.

So if you are arriving Friday you probably won’t need the rhino chaser!

Just got off the phone with photographer Allen Mozo. He shared his story of a crazy late afternoon tow session at glassy outside Log Cabins with Dave Wassel, Dane Kealoha, Buttons and Garret McNamara… Solid 25’ Hawaiian scale with Wassel getting the wave of the day an even bigger barrel with exit… The sun was going down and the sets were macking… On the way back to Haleiwa at near dark, they pulled closer to have a look at Waimea when a giant coast to coast set came in… He said he’s lucky he didn’t go to far in to look because it closed all the way across the bay way outside the line up… Then comes the gnarly part… Sun was gone and they had to come in to Haleiwa Harbor in the dark… Those of you who know that channel, know how gnarly it gets when the waves are giant… To do it in the dark is plain frightning. He said it was very scary!! When he made it safely to the boat ramp an old man around 70 years old was rinsing off his little 14’ boat… When trying to come in the man told him, “Just don’t look back!” Hahahahahahaha!!! Classic!! One thing Allen and the guys said, it was amazing how fast the waves came up this time and they were stoked it got that big… This was easily the biggest day of the season… To bad it peaked in the dark…

Guyess Mav’s is next. Too bad the window for the paddle in contest is closed. Mother Nature doesn’t pay any attention to the contest window, does she? But maybe it’ll be big enough to tow. Lookin’ forward to some long walls.

Aloha keith,

Jaws and Hookipa are jumping over here today. Forecast for you guys coming over for the Oahu get together is for the big north and west rolls to diminish, but a new smallish south swell to arrive this weekend to reinforce the dwindling present south.

Enjoy the ride!
