girl shapers

i have a girl shaper in my staff who is very good, but she gets very dissalusioned by the dominance of the males in shaping. she has recently shaped boards for an unameable ex wct surfer, who didnt know she did the board! he loved it! passed it on to his big name shaper to ride he liked it too, they all thought i had shaped it. when the news got out the shaper/sponsor lowered his head and walked away mumbling something about begginers! the pro surfer then said he wanted to give it back and have one shaped by me! poor girl is doing quite well she gets 3-5 orders a week she glasses & sprays as well. but we find it difficult to get people to believe in her. guys and girls will check out one of her shapes withouit faulting it and then still want it shaped by me or one of our other male shapers! can any one offer us some advice and or encouragement? http://www.feraldave.com

While I still ws building boards in Fla., I was introduced to a woman, Erica Eggert, originally from New Jersey. She was shaping for the other central Fla. women who she had come into contact with that were looking for new boards. She traveled to central America for surf trips, shaped her own boards, but the other male shapers she sought advise from were telling here it was a dirty job and she wouldn’t and couldn’t do it or like it. She was no wimp, about 5’9"-5’10", she would come to the factory and watch my techniques and the first things I told her was to forget anything the other shapers had told her. She was so cool, I had nothing going with her, but this was an opportunity to have a woman by my side that did everything I liked. We never hit up the hot and heavy, she was killed shortly after by a drunk driver on her way to her day job, bartending!!!

Good advice. All I can add to this is to make sure she knows she’s appreciated and valued there regardless of what hangups these “pros” have. In a situation like this it’s important that the boss or mentor step in and do the encouraging.>>> thats commendable that you have her on your staff, girls seem to be really > precise and accurate as well as creative! tell her to forget what pros > think and just keep her core customers happy and the rest will follow… > it will take time to change the mainstream veiws!

Dave, is this the same lady who shaped some of the boards I saw on Bali last year, under the Diverse label? I still remember one of those boards - sat in poppies II for an hour eying it up from every angle, loved the sensible thickness in the tail. Wish her the best luck, she’s on the right track. tom>>> i have a girl shaper in my staff who is very good, but she gets very > dissalusioned by the dominance of the males in shaping. she has recently > shaped boards for an unameable ex wct surfer, who didnt know she did the > board! he loved it! passed it on to his big name shaper to ride he liked > it too, they all thought i had shaped it. when the news got out the > shaper/sponsor lowered his head and walked away mumbling something about > begginers! the pro surfer then said he wanted to give it back and have one > shaped by me! poor girl is doing quite well she gets 3-5 orders a week she > glasses & sprays as well. but we find it difficult to get people to > believe in her. guys and girls will check out one of her shapes withouit > faulting it and then still want it shaped by me or one of our other male > shapers! can any one offer us some advice and or encouragement?

Maybe you missed the slang bang. Say hello to Barbie … [blush] have fun!
