Glass Cloth.. 4OZ = ?gsm ....

Hi all,

One supplier of fiberglass here (Australia), uses gsm (Grams per Square Meter) to measure the weight of their glass cloth.

The cloth is available from 30gsm to 300gsm, and i believe it is E - glass.

I am wondering how GSM might convert into Oz. ?

Sorry this is a little left field.

yea i think theres roughly 30 grams to an ounce??(not sure exactly)

they usually round it off to the nearest ounce…

i get 185 gram they call 6oz, or 55 gram they call 2oz…

so your 30gram would be 1 oz and the 300 gram ,10oz…

yea i forgot to add .in the U.S. they measure in oz per yard.

where as we measure grams per square meter,

thats why the oz - grams ,doesnt match up exact…

Like Bert sez-

It’s 28 grams to the ounce* 0.91 yards to the meter (roughly 0.82 square yards to the square meter) so the 30 gms/square meter = 1 oz/square yard conversion is plenty close enough. Call it in the 110-125 gms/square meter range, which would correspond to the 3.7 to 4 and change ounces per square yard that passes for 4 oz. cloth here.

Hope that’s of use

doc…

  • and if you wanted to see something funny, back in the day it was a bunch of stoners with a metric-calibrated scale trying to figure out ounces while weighing controlled substances. Multiplying ( correctly) by 28 just wasn’t gonna happen.

Thanks guys ! Thats a big help.

(As for a bunch of stoners trying to mutliply by 28… sounds like my high school !)
