Seams that I don’t get much feedback on my board builds, maybe just no interest I hopes.
Well here is something I feel maybe of value to those anal laminators out there. A trick I learned damn close to 50 years ago, photos are of 4 oz. and Not as EZ as 10 oz. Volan, HA!
#1 grasp single strand (hard part).
#2 pull and bunch up material.
#3 return bunch up to form.
#4 grasp far side of cloth and pull that single strand or maybe 2 and pull it out.
(If breaks no sweat the line will only be faint).
#5. Cut, it will be straight and may help you save material.
Jezz, I hope this helps somebody!
Nice.
We are talking about removing dirty strands right?
Pay attention kids.
Learn as much as you can from the old-timers my dad used to say.
I’m probably not too far behind ya.
Nice tip.
Thanks.
I think it is a guide to cut a straight line.
Gotta take some shots of the last board I glassed with crappy cloth. I pulled a couple of bad strands, but I left a couple black ones and they stand out now. When I pulled the strands, I thought it would show up more, but the dark strands really stand out.
Exactly. But, you can certainly remove the occasional brownish strand too. I was shown the technique by Ronald Patterson, In 1958, when he was glassing and sanding for Burland Surfboards in La Jolla. Surfboard sanding, at that time, was done with a belt sander, or by hand. I’ve done it both ways. 1960, was the first time I saw a disc sander used to sand a surfboard, when I started shaping for Velzy.
