Hi Need a bit help with the materials used for glassing. Can some of you guys just list the chemicals you guys use for the laminating, hot coating etc… I just watched the glassing 101 video but didn’t quite get all the chemicals that are used in the process. So if one of you guys could just list them ( and to some degree explain what they do), i would appreciate it.
This is what I use. I copied the info out of Fiberglass Supply’s www.fiberglasssupply.com web site. 1. Silmar S249A is the primary surfboard laminating resin used by the surfboard manufacturing industry throughout the world. 2. To make the laminating resin into a sanding resin (Hot Coat) you add Surface Agent to the laminating resin. It is a styrene wax solution used to cause polyester, vinyl ester resin and gelcoats to cure tack free. 3. Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide (MEKP) is the substance (commonly referred to as catalyst) added to a polyester resin in specific quantities to allow the polyester to cure (harden). 4. Acetone for cleaning brushes and tools 5. Optional : 32-737 Surfboard Gloss Resin to provide a hard durable glossy finish coat for surfboards. Note that you can have different processes and final coats are avaiable to finish the board. This web site will help in that area. http://www.surftown.net/archives/october/story2.htm 6. This is not a the list, but one of my favorites: 3M Paint Buster Hand Cleaner, a cream type hand cleaner that is non-toxic and non-caustic, enabling quick removal of marine repair and refinish materials from hands without the use of skin damaging solvents.>>> Hi Need a bit help with the materials used for glassing.
