Glassing EPS200 short SUP blank

Hi verybody,

This is the coolest, most informative forum I’ve been on. The biggest library on surfboardbuilding on the globe, I’m sure. Thanks. I’m just trying to absorp as much info as I can, phew. Awesome!

After lurking here for some time now and revelling in The Knowledge, I still managed to come up with a question. I’m about to build a 7’8" Dumpster Diver-ish SUP, drawings courtesy by NCPaddlesurfer. Thanks Dwight. It has been a while since I built my last board, but I got that itch again  !

I’ll be having the blank hotwired out of EPS200 (not sure how that translates to US densities) and I want to glass it with 3 layers of 160 grams per square meter on the deck and 2 layers of the same on the bottom. No stringer. Maybe an extra deckpatch, but I want to keep things as light and simple as possible. (The weight of the glass is somewhere between 4 and 6oz if I’m not mistaken.)

I’m a light dude, weight hovering between 65 and 70 kilograms. So…

Do you think this will be strong enough?

The Greenroom reproductions of my design are made with a 2 layer 4oz S bottom and 2 layer 4oz S deck. They have deep heel dents right behind the handle. Right were your “heels” ride when paddling.

The next time they glass some, they’re going to add a 2 ft long 6oz E deck patch centered where the heels sunk into the deck. Probably setting the patch on a diagonal.

I put the 6oz E cloth patch on my deck. The patch was left off the Greenroom boards because the buyer was worried they wouldn’t be able to match my light weight. The buyer was correct, they came out heavier than mine. It’s something they just have to accept, unless they want to change to laminating on a table, instead of the board.

for the curious

Hi Dwight,

Thanks for the additional info on the glassing. It’s kinda hard to translate the cloth weights from ounces to grams and vice versa, but my 160 grams cloth is comparable with 5 ounces glasfiber I think. So putting 3 layers of that on the deck will definitely be heavier but probably also stronger.

The EPS200 however is pretty hard to come by and I may have to settle for an EPS150 blank. I think I’ll just go for it and see how it turns out in the strength/weight ratio department…

I’m scrounging up all the parts and stuff right now. Can’t wait to start building!
