I will never feel confedent during the process/dance but I will feel like grabbing a beer when the job is finished.
so basically it would seem that no matter how many times you do it, glassing keeps you humble!
On about board #25.
15 or so have been poly, the rest epoxy.
Still learning plenty with every lam.
with humility your learning curve
has a chance to continue to climb.
when confidence becomes a block
your learning curve flatlines.
…ambrose…
Howzit balsa, I went through the same thing except I got lucky. Stopped by the Plastic factory to see a friend . I had been playing with resin and done repairs for a shop before this so I was familar with resin. The owner was thinking about taking on a glasser and I asked him about it. For 3 months I watched and preped boards that he glassed to give him some time and relief and teach me the right way to do it. Finally one day I had the boards ready and the the resin ready for catalyst and he hands the bucket back to me and says you’re up. I used the prepared amount of catalyst and the board came out fine and it passed his test, and it was a tint to boot. After that I was confident enough because it was what I did. There were some periods when I took a couple of years off and the first board of a new era would have me a little on edge but that was it and things were smooth. I have watched the videos and there are some good ones that cover it good and the Damascus ones are very good especially with Mr Clean doing the work. The only thing is the vids don’t really cover the tricks we have learned that can make glassing a pleasure with great quality. Aloha, Kokua
Takes maybe couple hundred to learn to glass boards consistantly…a change of resin /hardner , can still catch you out,if you do not know the colour changes or signs , not so bad if a shortboard cause you can get them wrapped up Quick …longboards got to be more carefull…if I am using resin i know really well …at times i mix up resin and begin to start glassing, could not really remember how much hardner I added…automatic pilot so to speak…
Just thought I’d post up a link to the finished article. I think she turned out ok after all!
