Glassing Material List...

Hey,

Is there just a basic material list for fiberglassing? I will be shaping out my first board this year and any help is appreciated!

well your resin poly or epoxy, squegge fiber glass mixing bucket syringe for measuring cat.(for poly the only epoxy i used was west sytems) and glassing stands.

LAM:

  • stands

  • glass

  • resin

  • measuring / mixing buckets

  • squeegee

  • tape (if doing a cutlap)

  • cleanup materials (rinse buckets, etc.)

  • safety materials (respirator, eye protection, eyewash, etc.)

HC/GC:

  • brushes

  • tape

Howzit soulstice, I’d add razor blades and if he is going to do the sanding he’ll need sand paper also, add to that some paper towels .Aloha,Kokua

…and gloves.

Is there any particular type of cloth (i.e. E-Glass?) and resin that works better for basic start-up glassing?

Mucho gracias for the list of items!

Aloha,

Fishy

i highly recommend greg’s epoxy resin (Resin Research). as for cloth, Warp E glass should suit you just fine, although regular E is also fine, or S, or whatever.

So it’s just resin and hardener to glass? What about HOT COAT?

I’v only done ding repairs so my smarts of glassing are not there yet.

Aloha FISHY

hotcoat is resin wiyh wax in styrene added.

Fishy,

IF you decide to go with Poly, then I would use UV cured lam resin. Greg Loehrs (sp?) Resin Research epoxy seems to have a large following and is a great way to glass with as well. I’ve never used it but it’s certainly a good option

Cause I don’t feel like working right now, here goes:

Assuming that you using Poly to glass with…

  1. Poly resin,

  2. Hot coat resin ( you can add Surfacing Agent to the poly to make this yourself, or you can buy it already mixed up

  3. Fiberglass. E Cloth is fine.

  4. MEKP (Poly catalyst)

  5. Tape, the green kind, you can use the blue painter tape, or regular old masking tape would also work, just not as well.

  6. Plastic buckets. You can get ones that have measurements on them

  7. Liqiud volume measureing device. A set that shows milliters to ounces.

  8. Small plastic cups.

  9. Rubber squeegee to spread resin.

  10. Rubber gloves

  11. Suitable rack to glass on. This you can make yourself. I used two sawhorses for my first board or two. I would highly recommend not using sawhorses. Spend the time to create something decent. The end product, and the process you go through will turn out MUCH better.

  12. Suitable environment to glass in. Garage is ideal.

  13. Dropcloth to not mess up the floor. I use rolls of brown paper from home depot.

  14. A very good pair of scissors to cut the cloth. I use fiskars brand that are spring loaded

  15. Razor blades. By a box of 100. Best $8 you’ll ever spend

  16. Rice paper if you want to do a logo.

  17. A soft lead pencil to write your name on the blank.

  18. Whichever fin system you go with, you’ll need the crap to glass that in.

  19. Acetone for clean up.

  20. AND MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, A 6000 SERIES RESPIRATOR FROM 3M. Anytime you ahve resin open, you should have it on.

Like I said, my recommendation would be to go with UV cured resin. You can get it premixed at fiberglass hawaii. You’ll need to catalyse this anywhere UV light can’t get to…Finboxes, under colored rice paper decals etc. IF you glass with UV resin then you absolutely need to have a structure that you can glass in without letting in any UV light. A garge with all windows taped is suitable.

Thanx sooooo much you guys rock

Old shoes and a plastic apron held on by masking tape. Now you will look like Pro. RB

well…I do want to look like a pro ha ha ha but MEKP is some scary stuff is it mandatory ? aahhhh!!!

MEKP is polyester resin catalyst. Not the friendliest stuff on earth fer sure.

Yes it is mandatory when using polyester resin. No MEKP, no curing.

However you can avoid using MEKP for lmainating if you are using UV cured poly resin, though you will still need at least a little bit of it if you are installing finboxes, or using colored logo decals.

OR, if you go the epoxy route , then it is not necessary at all.

well…if know boby minds explain UV cured poly resin, Like its light activated some thing like camera film?
