When laying up three layers of glass on the deck where would you cut the extra lap? Thanks for any help...
first 2 layers cut to rail, top (last layer) cut to lap onto other side.
HTH…
If you’re using epoxy, 3 layers of glass at once is pretty ambitious. You might want to consider doing 2 then adding a third layer in another batch. It’s hard to wet out 3 layers at once without a lot of frothing…
Don’t do all three at once!
(PUPE) Recently I’ve been adding a tailpatch to my boards more often, laid up the way Bartt described (all 4oz). Tailpatch cut like a “V’ to about 18” from the tail out to just below the top of the rail, next layer full length wrapped to just below the apex of the rail, then the fullly lapped layer. Over the tailpatch 3 layers you gotta spread and let the resin sit a bit before pulling, otherwise no problems. Huge strength gain at only a couple ounces of weight. Backyarder .02
You can see slight color difference at the tal in this pic of a 5’10 x 18-1/4 x 2 that I made last month, weighs in at 5lbs 6oz
Thanks for the help everyone, I am using RR epoxy so I will glass the first two layers to the rail let it set then glass the top layer to the bottom as normal.
I have thought of doing a tailpatch but this is only my third board and I have visions of the transition to the tailpatch leaving a rise in the glass, thanks for explaining it Bud, maybe on the next one. My first board did snap at the front of the fin box, 9’6"single fin.

If I understand you correctly the tail patch is the first layer and the full lap goes on last. Does this make sanding the transition easier? How much sanding is necessary?
Hey Lebowski, have you started the new board?

Sorry about that. My questions got inserted into the qoute.

Yup, Got one going, Its a 8’10" single fin. It turned out 16.5" x 22" x 14" with concave to flat to vee out the back. Stop by and check it out next time you are on the beach. Just waiting for the glass and resin to arrive to finish her up.
IME the lump at the transition is feel-able after the lam, but seems less than a fin box patch under one layer; I have not had any extra snading work to get it flush. The hotcoat fairs it out almost completely, then with a normal sanded finish it is flat.
From this angle you can see this one still has pretty lumpy finish overall, but you cannot feel any ‘line’ from the tailpatch. Backyarder .02
three layers of glass is totally do-able with epoxy, you just have to move fast. cut the first two layers to the rail like normal (i think its better to stager them so you dont end up with a lump in the middle of the rail for the sander to try and fix) and mix a small batch of epoxy. You want enough to be able to set the leash plug, wet out the decals as well as the two layers of cloth but not enough to start dripping over the rail. wet out the cloth then pull off all extra resin (you want the cloth to be pretty dry). then immediatly pull out your third layer of cloth, cut laps and mix up a second batch of resin, this time enough to do the whole thing; laps, fill coat (if you use one, i tend not to with epoxy), ect and go go go.
I use RR CE resin with RR fast hardener and have never had a problem this way- I have done some EPS/epoxy guns with airbrushed art and 4+6+6+6 oz decks and they came out great, no frothing, no milkyness and no gassing. hopefully this will help you guys save some time
I’ve done two layer full wrap w/no issues. 3+ was more work. Like bud, I cut may patches to end just before the rail starts and do it first - no problems.
And… Hahahaha! I’m in love w/6 oz… my 4 layer 6oz rails w/RR epoxy have been getting washes up on the rocks with nary a scratch.
