Glassing standard?

Hey Gents,

I’m getting quite a few orders from novice surfers who know nothing about the lamination process nor do they have any input about how strong/heavy /light they want thier board to be. I want my boardmaking style to be of the old school influence so that being said, how should I have a board glassed when the customer has no input? Volan, 8 bottom, 8/6 top? Your input is greatly appreciated.

Forgot to mention. Input is needed for boards in the 9’ to 9’6" size range.

Lots of guys just go 7.5oz top & bottom. (cut lap of course) If you want your

product to be durable, add a 4 oz. silane deck. You’ll still get the nice green color

without the extra weight of another layer of volan. (unless that’s what you want)

Just remember that weight for weight there is no difference in strength

between silane & volan. It is just a difference in the coating of the fibers.

Just checked with Harbour and their “old-time” boards are

glassed 10 oz volan top & bottom with a 6 oz. silane deck

added. Just about bullet proof!!! Hope this helps ya decide!

This is what I was looking for. Thanx.

There is no single answer.

Your boards should be durable.

Determining the glassing schedule starts with the strength of the foam, EPS requires (sometimes much) more that most PU blanks

The agility of the user also comes into play. Less agile surfers get up more slowly and usually have a few moments on one knee. This puts a major stress on a small area of the deck, resulting in dents in all but the strongest deck schedules.

If by “old school” you actually mean “heavy” then go to it with the 10 ounce stuff. “Old school” also suggests clear laminations with volan treated cloth. No benefit other than the slight green tint.

I definately understand what you guy’s are saying. I use PU blanks and am looking for a glassing schedule for boards in the 9’-9’6" range. Clear laminations and am looking for light colors that still show the light green tint of the Volan treatment. 10 bottom, 10 top with a 4oz silane I think will be a good standard?

I think you should look to the source. A higher density blank with 8 bottom and 8/6 deck would be plenty strong. Just my 2 cents.
