glassing wooden boards

Hey,

Has anybody tried laminating wooden boards (hollow wooden surfboards) with less than 4oz (160grams) glassing. Since the wood allready gives it more strength wouldn’t it be an idea to glass with e.g. 104grams (not sure what that would be in oz)??? It might save some weigth.

cheers,

Thomas

Shure, I tried 50g/m² and 80g/m². Works out perfectly in my opinion.

Some more thoughts on this topic: some hollow boards need to be glassed for structural reasons, for example if thin wood skins are used (like 3mm poplar ply) and / or the ribs have larger distances between them. Other hollow boards don’t need the glass for structural reasons but only to be more ding resistant or to avoid leakage. This kind of board doesn’t actually need to be glassed but only coated for example with epoxy resin(->search forum for glassless surfboard)

some glass with 2 oz.

I have one with glass only on the rails

Hi,

160g/m2 ~= 5oz/ft2

typing the following in google 160g/m^2 to oz/ft^2 gives:

**160 (g / (m^2)) = 0.524329328 oz / (ft^2)**

it is not just converting the weight but also the area!

**104 (g / (m^2)) = 0.340814063 oz / (ft^2)**

Thank’s guy’s i don’t know how i got to the idea that 160g=4oz. I’m going to try laminating with the 104grams.

Yes… I lam the inside of my boards with 4oz so I only lam the outside deck and only use resin to seal the bottom. This cuts weight down plus, while laminating the inside I can control where I want re-enforcement with out worrying how it looks.
