glassing

if a board is super thin in the tail and the nose, would it make sense to possibly put a single layer of 6 oz on the bottom or is this just a bad idea.how much heavier would it really be.anybody with a quick list of necessary glassing supplies, planninng on going to west marine ilive on cape cod so not quite sure of any other possible supplies shops.have a glassing 101 vid and have a pretty good idea of what to get but figured maybe someone might have some input of there own.anybody out there from the cape.thx

Are you talking about one layer of 6oz versus one layer of 4oz? If that’s the case, go for the 6oz. Personally, unless you think that you can really feel the difference when you’re riding, I don’t think the added weight is an issue–especially of you are concerned about the structural integrity of the board. Also, if you’re going to be riding on the cape this winter, you need something with a bit more heft to it. I build all my boards with 6oz glass. JCs video, God bless it, is a reflection of current market demands on ultra lightweight boards. Build somethat that will last, and you will be stoked for a long, long time.

Howzit Whitelung, I have some customers who went from 4oz bottoms to 6oz bottoms and they are stoked. they told me that the 4oz bottom boards only lasted about 4 to 6 months where their 6oz bottom boards are lasting them at least a year or more and the weight difference is not a big factor. cool.i didnt think it would be a big deal weight wise.only stronger.seems right sounds right.im currently riding a 6 6 kechele stub fish, its fun. i like a wide board.kind of longer than i wanted, though its good when it gets big.cant wait to glass this board.5’9"20 wide14 nose 16 tail 2in.thick in middle/some dome in the deck thinner in nose and tail.real thin.have to remember its my first shape.was wondering where anybody from the cape got their supplies/resins etc.probly going to just order from fiberglass supply co. but they’re on the other side of the country.still have a more performance shorty blank just itching to start on.

wait.just reread that.you’ll make a short board w/straight 6 oz.2 layers of 6 oz. on the deck?how much heavier could it be?

Check out Surfsource in Florida. They are dependable and not quite as far. For the best price you need to supply them with a DBA or equivalent since they are wholesalers. Krokus

Warm Winds in Narragansett has glassing supplies and Tom will answer glassing questions.

Howzit Rich, he should stick to a 6oz bottom and double 4 oz deck. This will be strong enough unless he weighs 200lbs. Aloha, Kokua
