I’m finishing up two boards right now, both have been glossed and I got through most of one with an old wool pad that has worked great. The threads just gave out on the leather/canvas seam. I couldn’t find another like it in town so I bought a synthetic 8" pad that just isn’t doing it for me. I’ve seen some foam hook/loop (velcro) type pads for polishing finishes at autobody stores as well. What is the standard used in most glass shops? I’m getting out the needle and thread and having a go at mending the old one. Tom
Tom,I have a wool 9" on a hard backing for most/general use and a synthetic 7" for fine polishing.Herb.
I ended up restiching my wool pad. I use this 8" pad over an old PowerPad thinking that it will be more forgiving along the rails etc. I just couldn’t get the acrylic/synthetic pad to get me to the high gloss shine I was looking for. Once I went back to the wool pad, no problem. What’s up with that? I’m cleaning up my gloss/tape line with 120/220 on a block, hand rubbing everything with 400 then to 600. I haven’t gotten any “good” polishing compound yet so I use Turtle Wax fine white polishing compound with lots of water. Doesn’t take long to get the shine up. Definitely going to start charging xtra for gloss though. I noticed the heat buildup is greater with synthetic than wool, could that be keeping me from getting to the finished state? Oh well, I finished up both boards last night. Tom.
I don’t do much glossing anymore because it isn’t worth the time, but someone will insist that the board be shiny so I gloss and polish for a very high$$$ price,I inhereted my wooly ,so I’m not sure where to get one ? try 3m?keep it clean.Herb.
Oh yea, they do work much better than the synth. types with alot less heat I KNOW LOOK UP A AUTOMOTIVE PAINT SUPPLY STORE. THEY USE THEM OVER SANDING PADS FOR A MORE FOR GIVING SAND FINISH.Herb…also they will have lots of good polishes to pick from.
