Gluing my own blank

ok, looks good but i have holes on the glue up, any taughts on how to fill them up?

I would not worry about those kinds of holes for now. Once you have rocker, outline, rails bands cut into the foam, many of the defects will go away and there may be a couple that you cannot see now that show up. Any extra glue or filler before the shaping usually makes the shaping more difficult as the density and texture of the glue or filler is different than the EPS.

Also, if you get a dent, a damp rag and a clothes iron can often steam them back into shape.

Be careful applying the templates to the new blank. One time I got an outline with nose and tail reversed, the other time I had top and bottom reversed and started shaping deck features into the bottom…

…and one time i forget to catalise the resin for the fin plug holes…and another time i over catalised resin, and another time i used the template one side over the stringer and the other next to it…and another time i forgot one marking on the rail bands and got extra boxy rails…the list is endless my friend, not accounting for the overshaping of tails and noses or my scopping of decks etcetra and etc…

i think i could easily swap the rocker templates also. Thanks for the advice.

Its good to read that is not only me who makes mistakes, and is good to be able to get so much info here on swaylocks.

I think i will fill the holes with resin and q cell later after the cuts.

cheers and good waves.

Jrandy is right. Don’t worry about filler until the blank is shaped. Then use whatever you normally use and fill voids. Epoxy slurry or Spackle, but wait until after it is shaped.

lookin good! i am back on my glue up project. question???
best sandpaper type and grit. thanks for the help.

@arlosilva I really like these pictures from the other thread!
I use lower grit sandpaper to start on EPS 40-60-80.
The places that sell supplies for wood floor sanding have the paper with adhesive on the back. I use this kind to stick to boards to make sanding tools.

PS: It’s probably worth trying out the sandpaper on an extra piece of foam to get the feel for how much it cuts and how hard to push.

Same grit for me. I also use surform for quick foam take off. I don’t care pit from foam cells tearing, it give more grip to epoxy slurry seal.
