This one is really gonna be out of my envelope… but I believe I have the tools. Now for the vision.
Was up to Clark Foam today for a 10-1Y triple stringer, to make a pretty standard longboard for a friend getting back into surfing.
Someone had ordered a fishing board blank, made from two sailboard blanks: the center of one was cut out and patched into the center of the other, yielding a monster blank about 30 inches wide.
BUT… the remaining rails of the “donor” blank were standing there together, stringerless and not even glued together (just held by rubber bands). It looked like the meanest gunniest linear spear… I had to have it, and got it cheap too considering how much foam is there.
Now, I need to see, question, investigate and consult as to shape, volume, bottom contour, rocker, weight, glassing… all of it. I’ve seen the Quigg surf/paddleboards (they reportedly don’t surf for squat, but they’ll catch ripples); I’ve paddled a couple Pang boards; I paddled one other EPS/epoxy board (and broke the fin and box clear out by hitting a rock, cost a pretty penny to have it repaired).
I’ve see the Paul Jensen 12-footer. To me that’s just a large surfboard. I’ll look at woodensurfboards.com, but I suspect wooden examples are another realm, at least because they are so much heavier than racing paddleboards.
More news to come, and a pic. Maybe tomorrow but more likely Monday, since I can’t jar the kids off the home PCs.
