dutch,
The following threads pertain to depth adjustment and handle modifications on the Hitachi but provide some good pics for reference and maybe who to hit up for info.

Of course it goes without saying to ensure that the tool is unplugged. Remove the belt cover and the belt. The pulley on the cutter is a normal thread and the motor pulley is a reverse or left hand thread. Remove the brushes before disassembly to prevent damage to them. If you do not have a pin wrench to fit the holes in the pulleys you can use a pair of needle nosed pliers to remove them if you are careful. They are usually not that tight. You will have to remove the 5 screws that secure the left side black plastic housing to the main body. You should be able to wiggle this cover off leaving the cutter and motor armature seated in the right half. Then you can remove the cutter/drum and its bearing. You may have to remove the metal cover on the right side to help the cutter/drum out of the bearing or the bearing may come with it. If the bearings are ok you could swap the drum or cutter without removing the bearings. If you have to remove the bearings you will likely need a small bearing puller. Hope this helps if not pm me.

Thanks so much for that wow it looks great now i just need to modify it. wow
right on
Well thanks for everyones help! I was going to change the drums but ended up modifing the planer instead. The links that were recommended got me into the mood to fix my planer.
I got the belt and pulley off, but the bearing on the other end is stuck and I don’t want to damage it or the seat. I’m thinking a wooden dowel of the same diameter, lightly tapped would work? Anyone?
I tried taking 10 deep breathes and not getting anywhere.
all the best
you also need to remove the brushes before trying to remove the end cover. You’ve got the belt off, the small pulley does NOT need to be removed and the larger one only slightly snugged when put back on. A dowel the size of the bearing face works well to tap out the armature and cutterhead, reverse the process when putting back together. There aren’t enough parts to get that confused over
It worked. Got my grit drum going.
Jim, thanks so much for the speedy reply.
