Was curious on your guys/girls thoughts on a glassing schedule. Living in the the northeast as a grad student makes winter glassing interesting right now I have 2 longboards two shortboards waiting to be glassed. Really jonesing on this one long board thinking about buying some uv cure doing that one outside (although heard its hard to resin tint still), and then doing the rest in a spare bedroom with normal rr epoxy. Almost all will be 6 oz glass, so will need some time to cure. Want these boards ready for spring, thanks for any input.
Less than optimal conditions. Use UV and do it in a room with out any UV light. Then attempt to flash it by pulling the drapes/blinds and exsposing it to UV. Glassing outside?? You’re kidding?? Right.
I’ve glassed indoors before with RR, I just put a towel under the door to prevent the rest of my place from smelling like epoxy. Put a double layer of tarp down to prevent any mess. It wasn’t bad by any means. I’m about to do it again soon too. The highs this week are starting to get to be like 19F or something… Outside probably won’t be fun. The resin will be so thick and annoying, among other problems.
Thermostat controlled seedling and pet heating pads/mats are available as well.
There is the low budget route using a muscle heating pad (without auto shut-off feature) on low setting under a metal cookie sheet or rectangular cake pan, thin dish towel or piece of T-shirt between pad and pan, **keeping a close eye on pan/pad surface temperature. **For more insulation from ambient room temp, place all of this inside a carboard box (24 beer-bottle case box). Watching pan temperature is critical though. Another potential option is the muscle heating pad under a few ceramic tiles (6"x6" tiles), watching tile temperature closely.
Awesome ideas and in terms of the uv I was going to to it inside then move it out into the sun just curious if the cold would screw with the resin at that temp. I think I will most likely glass some of the boards inside and hope it does not stink up the room lol. Glad to hear im not the only one struggling with the cold, was also thinking of doing some fins with the uv resin, stuff looks like it has alot of potential. Read the archives on here about peoples experience with it, was just curious how people in the cold, and their experience. Just super stoked just hit 6 months of achilles rehab and can finally get back in the water.
Wow.
That is hardcore.
Glassing indoors of your house.
That’s a whole new meaning to “Back-yarders”.
Go for it.
Get those things glassed,
and get back in the water!
Ive decided to go the patient route and wait till it warms up a bit. Going to grav some uv resin and do 1 longboard to keep me busy until then. Anyone know how much to use with 2 layers 6oz top, 1 layer 6oz bottom. I know the usual amounts just curiouse if with the uv cure you need more, less? Also thining bout adding a light blue tint, I know everyone add’s hardener, how much you think is a good idea? Thanks for all the help you guys rock.
wow, poly resin inside is hardcore. you must be renting. My wife freaks when I do poly ding repairs in the garage due to the smell.
I’m sorry, but I really can’t get past the image you’ve chosen as your avatar. I mean…what were you thinking???
Jimmy Buffett man, as out of place as his music can be, he does live the dream just travels, surfs, and drinks in the carribean.
I’d hardly call the crap he does “music”.
No, he doesn’t. He’s a full on kook who only knows how to get in other peoples’ way. I chased him out of the water, once. He’s a phony.
Lol, well I mean we all start somewhere, maybe some people grow out of their kookiness and others dont. His music is not the greatest I will admibt that being a diehard NIN fan, and a long time pearl jam groupie. Nonetheless my parents get down with it and his tailgates do rock pretty hard, and are better then half of the rock shows I go too where people are more concerned about scoring yay and seeing tits. Plus the whole kook thing is relative, I have been surfing my entire life, and coming off a major injury now in my late twenties has been humbling. Thier are prob people who see me at my local break and think I have no idea what im doing, but I was surfing that break before they even bought a board. Plus I mean half the image is as a major joke, but i mean look at that smile.
Yea GF and family have forced the move to the shed with UV resin, will have to wait out the warmth do to some epoxy. . . . . Hopefully the boards dont ride like crap hah.
I haven’t been surfing my “entire life”. I started when I was 13. That was 51 years ago.
Anyway, Buffett’s music sucks, and he’s a total poser kook. I would have run him over that day, but he was using a board that belonged to a friend of mine. He’s lucky.
You are correct it has been 20 years I started surfing aroung the age 6-7. I agree his music is not the best, the whole image is ment to be much more satirical in nature, the abstraction of a person from society being able to drift and live a simple life, yet its predicated by millions of dollars on songs about cheeseburgers, which supports an industry of slaughter, factory farms and many other terrible things. Nonetheless you clearly harbor some feelings against him for obviouslt waranted reasons of your own which I respect. Personally im not a fan of the phrase kook thats all, for me its a negative part of our sport and lifestyle thats about exlcusion rather then inclusion, and leads many surfers to have a large ego, that I feel is un-warranted, we all make mistakes, have been in the wrong spot at the wrong time. And im sure if the ocean could speak she would think we are all kooks. Any advice on getting my feet back underneath me after a pretty severe tendon tear?
It’s horrible. Adult nursery rhymes for drunken ex-fratboys. I’ve had to work with him a couple of times. I was embarrassed to be in the same location as him.
Or you could buy a UV light and do it in a garage with enough heat to keep the resin from getting funky. I’m your age and being in school you don’t need to kill any more brain cells than a typical grad student already does.
Agreed on that, especailly when your finishing up a philosophy degree. No Bueno.
you might get some interesting ideas. But none worthwhile
Maybe a little too much time with the old Surfer magazines. These hateful rants are starting to sound like excerpts from the Unabombers manifesto.
