Grasshopper Invades San Diego

Hey guys - flying into San Diego Thursday about noon. Hoping to catch some waves in South San Diego when I get off the plane, as I will be staying with friends up in Carlsbad and probably surfing North San Diego a good bit. So looks like there will be some decent swell in the water - where should I check out? Sunset Cliffs (never surfed here), Windansea area (would love to get a few at Big Rock!), Blacks, etc.....?

Thanks!

Richard

i can never decide on what board to bring. i am leaning towards a sleek little 6'2 roun pin i have - hoping for some overhead barrels? am i being too optimistic?

also considering a little 5'8 quad i have that works good in head high surf or waves with more slope to them.

**We have a storm front moving through today but should be sunny by Thursday. If you want to surf the Cliffs, or if you bring the wrong board and
want a loaner board shoot me a PM:

I’m a little north (OC), but getting the same swell.  Expect some pretty extreme tidal swings.  Personally, I’d bring the 5-8 quad.  I’m guessing it’s a bit fatter than the 6-2, right?  You’ll want the extra float to battle the high morning tides swampiness.

Then again, I switched from a 6-1 round pin to a 5-7 quad a couple years ago, and never looked back.  Unless it’s double OH and draining, I’ve never felt under gunned.

Thursday Feb. 9 tides, 9:40AM 6.1' , 4:10PM minus 0.7'    You can check Surfline.com/pacific beach, in the morning, for an ok local indication report.

BE SURE YOU MAKE THE PILGRIMAGE TO    BIRD'S SURF SHED,  YOUR EYES WILL BULGE OUT, AND YOUR TONGUE WILL DRAG ON THE FLOOR!   SO MANY BOARDS, SO LITTLE TIME.

thanks for the advise guys! my bud has a ton of fishy type boards that i can borrow so i think i am going to bring something for some overhead hollow waves in hopes of finding them. only worry is that it may be too small…perfect for a couple feet overhead hollow waves but if it is going to be pushing 2x overhead (blacks?) i will definately be a bit under-boarded. i let another friend borrow my 6’6 as he is headed to hawaii this weekend! and my 7’0 got lent out and broken in south america this year…my friends travel/surf more than i do…going to have to work on that…

here is my tentative surf plan:

  1. thursday. head straight to the cliffs as it is so close to the aeroport. hit la jolla reefs in the late afternoon. continue north up to carlsbad to my buds house.

  2. friday. hit blacks early in hopes of some overhead tubes. surf cardif area in the afternoon.

  3. sat/sun/mon. play it by ear.

boards - i can squeeze 3 into a nice little slim bag. trading a board for a plane ticket to my frequent flyer-rich bud. he commissioned me to build him another one while i was at it. 2 for him, 1 for me.

fish

5’10 balsa skin twin fin fish for my bud. (this would be perfect for the cliffs right? i cant wax it up and surf it before i give it to its rightful owner can i???)

5'6

5’6 poly quad for my bud.

6'2

my sleek 6’2 thruster.

i also have a sweet 70’s style single fin 6’4 that would probably be amazing to ride out there. and a 5’10 flexy quad that loves a slabbing takeoff that would be purfect for big rock. too hard to decide!

That 6-2 looks like it was born for a big day at Blacks. Hope this swell cooperates!

Getting Cliffs and La Jolla in same afternoon might work, you'll have to move. Driving time Cliffs to Windansea 30 minutes during that congested hour, sunset 5:30. We may be getting near epic conditions Th/Fri, very warm weather with hi pressure offshore flow both Th and Fri with a strong swell predicted.

stooooooooooooked! see you guys out in the water!

There is loose talk on the evening news weather, about 10 foot surf on the way.

Surfed Goldenwest in Huntington today at lunch, there’s definitely swell on the rise. Have fun down there!

well some ones got some good timing, i went for a walk last night to the OB pier and had the pleasure of watching some big sets roll through and hit the pier then watch some people get totally soaked by the wave cause they were in the wrong spot at the wrong time

so ya the swell is pumping right now with really good weather

Swellwatch and the Nat. Weather Sevice agree the extra nice high pressure weather breaks down Fri. Watch out for onshore afternoon wind Friday  http://forecasts.swellwatch.com/#place=33.03629817885956_-118.4161376953125_8_2073_height_none_Sat_-1   Just got a been out there report from pre dawn, PB, mixed up swell, real size. Grasshopper might hit the tide about right with lower tide cleaning it up some, could take local knowlege to choose the right spot for the dodgy conditions. I don't have that exact info for Grasshopper.

Grasshoppers (locust) are invassive in California and if grasshopper gets to California the Department of Agriculture will hunt him down and exterminate him !!!

I understand that Sir Grasshopper arrived a bit early and got some decent size surf before heading further north… so I doubt the Dept. of Ag will find him!!

Hey guys - thanks for the info and generous gestures. And thanks for sharing the waves with an invasive species of kook from the east coast!!! Oh and the burritos and tacos too! And the 75 degree weather. I had an amazing time. Got some really good rides and had some epic sessions with good friends that I have not seen for a while.

Sunset Cliffs Thursday am and Blacks Friday am were really going off. Sunday am had a really good session at Pipes on a 5’3 stringerless Cristenson Mini-Simms. Also surfed Big Rock, Cardiff Reef, Turtles, Swamis, and Scripps pier and had a lot of fun at those spots too! The 6’2 worked really well in the bigger waves and made it home in one piece.  Luckily the 1# eps core/ balsa skin fish did not explode on the plane ride even though it has no vent. And my buddy put a big ding in his quad fish first time out - haha!

I did not make it to the shops in San Diego (Birds, Aloha Sunday) that I would have liked to visit, but I did get to go to SurfySurfy!

I even got to meet Doc Paskowitz and get a signed copy of his book! At the Promised Land movie Premier at the Palomar in Encinitas (my good friend that brought me out there did a lot of filming work for this movie - its very cool - check it out at http://promisedlandthemovie.com/ )

Grasshopper, If you can bring that Thursday surf with you again, please invade all the time.
