I did a search and google and found some pics. Man that look cold! But the waves look decent. Are you near the sea at all or do you just surf in the lakes?
Fortunately, my job does allow me to escape the midwest quite frequently … and in case I have time, at the right time, and in the right place, there’s always a board and a wetsuit along …
Two of my personal favorites are Narragansett, RI and Moss Landing, CA (though Moss scares me on some days – I won’t go when I look out there and see a surfer that looks like an ant compared to the wave he’s on ) I might be crazy but I’m smart enough to know I don’t have that much skill yet …
I like Cardiff too, and Oceanside Pier … oh and that place near Santa Monica where Sunset Blvd ends at the PCH … whatever they call it … it’s fun sometimes too.
Had a nice session at Hampton NH ‘The Wall’ last winter too … but those NE breaks North of the Cape are such a gamble … how often are they really on? Probably no more than the GL’s … though the wave quality is better there …
Saturday waves … a mess, but plenty big and got some nice rides. It did clean up a little about an hour before dusk, when the winds backed to about 10 kts and began veering W.
34 degree nasal/ear flushes the few times I went face first off of the board … sucked …
I forgot my leash too so did a little more board chasing than usual. Resorted to bodysurfing waves to catch up with my board … fun fun …
I haven’t been to Stoney yet, but I can tell you that the Lake Superior breaks are by far the best on the GL’s … more fetch and more depth = bigger waves, longer intervals and … what we all love … MORE POWER …
Somebody posted a vid on the ThirdCoast forum a while back of some newbies trying out Stoney and nearly getting themselves killed. I’ll try and dig it up and post the link. Frightening. Some of these spots are not to be messed with on certain days. Currents can run very strong and with short intervals as they are the shorebreak can be relentless … repentless even …
They basically got pulled downshore by the current, and into a shorebreak zone right at a nice rock ledge. Busted one of their boards in two, fortunately did not break the surfers in two …
