Greenlight 2+1 Centerfin box installation

I bought a 2+1 probox setup from Greenlight, which comes with the two probox side boxes and a 10.5 centerfin box.

I’ve scoured swaylocks and the intranet in general and havent found any definitive instructions on installing the centerfin box.

The side boxes, no problem, but the center box is still unclear.

I figured some other people have been in this situation so this might serve as a guide.

The specific questions are:

What kind of jig needs to be made to provide the right clearance for the box and reinforcement/resin?

Which direction does the box go in, never seen it on any boards, does the part that says hi-surf go towards the back?

Is it best to use a piece of glass, some fibers or just resin for reinforcement?

If anybody else has related questions to the 2+1 setup feel free to throw them in here.

Thanks.

Roger that Mr. Mellor. You’ve got to have a fin or a facsimile to eyeball the fin vertical and in line down the stringer. Otherwise the box will be set wrong/misaligned. As far as the curve, I’m under the same impression as you. It’s for the screw plate. Kokua had good advice to have an old fin with the pin cut off for easy in easy out when setting boxes.

"The curved slot for the fin pin should curve to the back(or tail) of the board."

Hi Jesus -

Just curious if there is a reason why?  I've installed them both ways and never noticed a difference.  I've also taken boxes out of broken boards and installed them 'reversed' in case pivoting the fin had created a worn area at one end.  Again, didn't notice a difference.

I thought the curve in the slot was simply to allow insertion of screw plate?  If so, I'm not clear why it matters which direction the box faces.

PS - I always cut those cross tabs out and insert a real fin to make sure everything is vertical.

Hi John there is no real reason for me other than personal preference,it just feels smoother when sliding the fin into the box and back at the same time,it doesn’t seem to hang up at all.

preciate it.

Guess i should have been more specific [img_assist|nid=1055043|title=10.5|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=100|height=75].  Which end of the 10.5 goes to the back?

Reinforcement…Just res, fibers, or glass?

Thanks.

The FU boxes have the slot in the center, so I don’t imagine it matter for front or back. I would imagine the same for the one you have.  ??

I made myself a jig out of a scrap of 1/4" ply. Just make the slot so that you have just a little clearance around the box. Like a 16th of an inch or so.

Thanks.

Youre right about the slot, but the little tabs that go across the box in the middle arent centered.

Do those get sanded off or something?

Better picture of the box, which way goes towards the tail?

On the FU boxes the little tab just gets cut out.

Not sure about that one, but I don’t know if it matters which end is forward.  IMO the slot for the fin is the important part not the tabs the get cut out.

The curved slot for the fin pin should curve to the back(or tail) of the board.

Hey fgallagher,

There’s a good video of how to install a centerfin box from Harbour Surfboards Here

It doesn’t really matter which way you install the box because some fins have the pin at the leading edge and some have the pin at the trailing edge. All the slot does is allow the pin to slide into the T-groove.

Normally you’d put the box in so the sloped part goes towards the nose though.

Have fun

I made plywood jig to install the HiSurf center fin boxes. The same jig also works for the FU / Bahne boxes.  It's just an over sized ProBox jig made out of 3/8 plywood. I don't have photos of the jig but here's some photos that might help....
