Greenough--Chris Brock Board

From the Oahu auction: Forget what it went for …but much more than pre-auction estimates

Be nice to know path to auction?

Hi Rog , hope your looking aftee that knee mate.

The board was in Brocky’s shaping/board shed for umpteen years at his rented place at the base of the Point.

When the owner of the place died the new owners kicked Brocky out and bulldozed the shaping shed…a board collector name of Ben King from Byron stopped by and picked up the board from Chris with the undertaking that if he onsold the board for a profit he would split the proceeds with him.

Fast forward a couple of years and Ben King drops dead from a heart attack on the beach at Angourie after a heat in the Aussie titles.

George gets word that the board is in the hands of Ben estate executors and steps in and makes an offer to retrieve the board.

He purchases the board back and puts it up for auction and hands the proceeds over to Chris who doesn’t own a thing and for whom a few K is mighty handy…I tell ya Brocky’s pretty pumped on it.

Very functional outline.

hey steve great story.

i feel a tinge off sadness for whats happened to some of those guys

Hey Steve,

Great story! A highlight of my first trip down under was meeting and chatting with Chris Brock. The cat you met…Peter Green pointed him out getting out of the water at the boat launch, and introduced us (where we met you this year) He was super friendly and stoked like a kid about surfing and boards and all. Glad to hear he ended up with the proceeds from the board sale…

Some of my favorite surfing footage is him in Innermost Limits and Morning of the Earth…

He still shapes…or was when I met him 4 years or so ago!!

Knee getting slowly better…been back in water for a week or so…

Cheers Mate,

Roger

Hey Proneman and Steve,

That is an interesting board for sure...still ahead in so many ways. I met Chris when I sprayed some of his shapes while working at Cleghornes, and it would be nice to know of his fortunes. He seemed like a decent sort, and I'd only be fair if the proceeds of that auction gain him some coin...

The pics here are of another GG...this one came up at the lam shop I'm at now, where we still do repairs. All sorts of stuff comes through, but not so often a conversation-piece such as this. A $20 garage sale find...always some other bloke finds 'em hey! And it'd be SO GROOVY to have as a fish nowadays.

Its not the full flextail or spoon, and its later than the auction board, but that aeroplane decal has always been one of my favourite.

Hey Josh,

If that really is one of Greenough’s designs it would be quite a find…I would forward pics to GG…to verify…look for PM

Roger

Im sure chip put up a pic of a chris brock. Pointy nose, forward widepoint, down to a beautiful round tail. Except it had a thruster setup. F*ck it looked very functional, and a lot of fun. I think huie does a similar shape ( You did one not long ago huie )

Also, i think its in the movie “believe” where he talks about boards n surfing, and he comes across as a top bloke and a stoked surfer. Hope he’s doing alright.

Chris is surfing, shaping and spreading the stoke.

Baddy is surfing, fishing and mentoring the grommets at Angas.

Baddy’ll come up and surf Lennox when it’s on and can easily be found in Brocky’s front yard or in the lineup…always up for a bullshitt session post surf.

Nice to see some karmic reward come back to Chris who has stayed true to the Morning of the Earth ethos and only ever spread good vibes.

Josh, I’d doubt that board was actually shaped by George…is there a name on it ?

My guess would be a Brocky shape or maybe Cundith.

The same trip when I met Chris Brock( April and May 06)…I went to a fund raiser(in Byron) for a Byron guy who had died and I bet it was Ben King. Alot of people donated surf related stuff for the auction and it was a successful event. George Greenough’s Coke board was one of the items on auction. He had made the board for a Coke commercial that he was hired for. The whole bottom of the board had a Coca Cola motif and there was attachments on the deck for mounting a camera. The guy that bought it lives in Suffolk. Not sure of source of board…but George Greenough authenticated it and signed it and was there at the auction. Was sitting at a table with Dick Hoole and Mrs. Peterson…they had donated items for auction as well.

Roger

Above Pic of Cape Byron…Steve…have you seen this vantage point?

Looks like the view from Dick Hooles house…

Take care of that Knee Rog…we can’t let any killer bacteria in Downunder.

Hey Steve...this was my thought exactly, as I don't believe George shaped in a production context...no shapers marks on that board at all. Nonetheless, again:- I love the aeroplane decal.

josh my bet  m cundith             you had to be here on the east coast in those days it would have been right up your ally.

Hey Huie,

Yep, I do believe I was born too late. Ahhh but maybe there'll be nostalgia for my own time, given 35 yrs.

I did do a stint in Byron and loved it... There's still SOMETHING there.

Proneman, I think that view is from the road out to Bangalow. There's Byron's Irony right there...those big sheds are chicken batteries. In a place chock-full of Vegan hippies, one of the biggest employers is a chicken processing plant.

This is true to the towns history long before surfing. There's a site where once stood a huge slaughterhouse and fish processing plant, where legend has it the offal was piped straight out into the water of Belongil to waiting sharks. Nobody surfed there much. I lived across the road.

The site was derelict for many many years and no attempt to re-inhabit it with cultural activities really ever kicked off...such as a cinema which had the sloping floor...not for the seating as per the usual cinema, but rather the original purpose of ease of washing guts downhill.

It just had the wrong vibe. I think its all demolished now.

kinda ironic Josh - Easter1990 , it was an ode to Howlin Wolf's    " Killin Floor "  at the byron bay piggery

Hey Kayu,

Thats legendary, the FIRST Blues festival...good one. That "Arts Factory" is also known as the Piggery...a different defunct meat plant. So thats Pork covered!

Forget this guys name…neighbor of Brock…let use ride this hollow board

yep, good story for sure...thought Ben King died on Pippies Beach ??? could be wrong but we had boardriders there the next day and had a minutes silence....   Speedy, I too was born too late, feel a strong connection to the seventies..

Hey Rog, thats Justin Sheridan (Sherro)…extremely talented multi board surfer with a “toothpick” replica shaped by…sorry name escapes me just for this second.

Sherro makes alot of “pro” soul surfers look very ordinary.

...thats Justin Sheridan...

Hey Steve, I was THIS close to remembering that name...I did a spray for Sherro on a Bear board, from a girlie pic he brought in. It ended up so porno-realistic that it had to be censored! He'll remember.
