Tried out my new GW 80’s model yesterday You can read about the 80’s model on Greg’s site. Mine is 5’11’ x 18 3/4 x 2/ 3/8 and has a flatish deck and fat rounded boxy rails (if that makes any sense) - Foiled fairly thick throughout, quite a lot of volume but all nicely blended in. Bottom has a bit of vee in the nose blending into a deep double concave in the last half which goes vee behind the rear fin. Low rocker with fliped nose and a bit of kick behind the rear fin. Side fins are set in from the rails a little bit more that your standard set up. Surf was about 3 ft (shoulder high) Winki pop (near Bells beach,Au)Winki’s a fairly fast, down the line kind of wave. I put in a set of FSC GYUs at first - the centre fin looked way too small for the width of the tail but I thought I’d give it a go anyway. Got two waves that sectioned in front of me, felt the tail sliding on the bottom turns, so I got out and swapped the centre fin for a G5. I notice that the board paddles great, the first wave I get - the board takes off like a rocket, comes off the top real fast. Next wave I do a slash on the face and feel the tail cut loose a bit and then bite - the tail doesn’t track and I get the board back under me in a reasonably dignified manner. I still have the GYU’s in up front and I think I can feel them flex a bit if I really push the tail - will put the G5’s in up front next time. Verdict - I love it, the board is very fast, loose but very forgiving and seems to generate speed out of turns - perfect for someone who wants to rip in small waves but doesn’t have the paddle power to surf a thinner, narrower “chip” type board or the skill to keep a “chip” in the pocket all the time. Reccommended for anyone thinking about going post-modern
sounds cool, but i couldn’t find the site. can anyone post the link?
J. Check: http://www.webbersurfboards.com/ The flash intro is a bit erratic you might have to reload to get the enter link
man, that site is literally all flash. what a pain in the butt. how in the heck did you find info about his surfboards on that thing? i can’t stand flashy sites that don’t deliver on basic navigational & information needs. stephen, how in the heck do you find info about his boards? thanks, j.
Contact Greg personally: (gwboards@bigpond.com) BTW… a big thanks if you`re the same guy (along with ajl, Fossil, and Ron Singletary) that recently backed me up in the www.longboard.net bulletin board.
yeah, that was me. i don’t know who the heck that guy thought he was. that wedge picture was really funny/sorta insane, but i didn’t like his comments. they were not only uncalled for but they where way off base. j.
oh yeah, this is funny though. i did love this pic. hopefully i can get it to work. http://romanosky.wedge.org/html/wild_wedge1.html
While I always get a chuckle from that Ron Romanosky shot, what I didnt care for was the "Boogie" poster
s malicious vibe. Interestingly, I have a customer whos an experienced waterman and shaper who sometimes (prone) surfs a 7
-0" long inflatable green alligator at a famous, high quality break in SoCal. Pre-dawn sessions, of course! True story.
Swaylocks is hitting an exciting new level in surfcraft design…
i don’t think he knew who/what the hell he was talking about. oh well, i guess that’s just a somewhat negative effect of noteriety – sometimes people will flame you for no reason. sorta like that guy that flamed herb the other day. i don’t know what it is about the internet that encourages people to do that. maybe it’s the anonomous nature of BB’s & email. anyways, the alligator thing sounds funny too. if you ever get a pic of it be sure to post it up. it’d be hilarious to see that thing cruisign down a nice wave.
Look at the smile on that animal’s face. It’s obviously never been mauled by the Wedge before. Or is it just stoked on any heavy tube. [smile] Rob Olliges
J. - When the site is working properly, a menu with all the models comes up after the intro animation. Either the site has gone haywire or the model range is being updated - you’ll have to e-mail GW himself
Sorry about the site dramas you guys, I’ll ask my brother Daniel, who set it up GW ps still got tears in my eyes from laughing at that shot at the wedge. There are a few ways of looking at it…the funniest seeming to be the creature’s naive glee(ie glee from the speed of rushing down the ‘breaker’ unaware of the thick impending explosion to follow. If anyone has more of this stuff I’d love to do a bit in my new design mag on it…contact me direct if you do to talk or for bigger files thanks
