Guam

I asked earlier if anyone surfs Guam and what it’s like. Now that I have been here for two months I can tell you that Guam is Good but there are very few breaks that are can be surfed. The ones that are surferd are realy realy good but the travel to get to them is a bear. All in all, I am blessed to be stationed somwhere there is surf. I could be in a desert.

Nowhere is perfect. At least you have waves. Catch one for me.

what branch of the service?

Hey, If you’re ridin waves, you’re one up one me.

So! Fish! give us a little better discription of the waves, lefts? rights? barrels? What kind of boards are you riding over there?

Some pics would help.

I was stationed in guam during 86-87 and there are a lot of places to surf. Check www.wannasurf.com and look up for guam.

I am in the Airforce. 19+ years now. I plan on doing 22 years 2 days and no minutes extra. The waves here are mostly reef breaks closing to fast and hard to surf. At the channels there are some really sweet breaks. My first ride was perfect glass on an 8’0" hand shaped balsa board. I am a little old school and love the feel of balsa. The kids here all surf the potato chips I loved so much a few years ago. The wave faces were about 5’ and rolling in right after right. The following day the wave direction changed and the other side of the channel was breaking but no barrels just fast left after left. Made my 8 years in Florida seem pretty sad.

Guam has got some awesome waves, but I wouldn’t make it a travel destination as the surf is pretty fickle. I lived there between 87-89. If you are travelling from Anderson, you probably do have a bit of a drive to get to the good breaks. I surfed Boat Basin regularly, as well as Magundas as both of those breaks were nearby (I lived on Nimitz Hill on Flag Circle at the time…killer view of Camel Rock at Piti Bomb Holes and knew what the surf was like based on where it hit the rock). Also surfed Gab Gab when Boat was closing out, and made a trip to Merizo once (and even the tip of Cocos), but should’ve gone more often. Since you are military, you should definitely get on base and check out Gab Gab on a big closeout swell. If you aren’t already going, you might want to check out Rick’s too. It’s a beautiful wave, but mean coral (like most breaks there). If there’s no surf, go to the Navy base and snorkel Spanish Steps. You won’t be disappointed.

i wuz USAF 1987-91 - put Guam, PI, Japan on my dreamsheet in that order. Ended up getting Japan (Honshu), and really got some OK waves while there afterall – but really wanted Guam cuz I’d seen and heard about waves there. Was palin’ around with a kid from a USAF family stationed here - bodyboarder type, hardcore, and who’d come here from guam – sayin lotsa good things about it. Definately you could do much worse for an assigment than Guam.
