Gulf

Agreed. They could install one at the defunct airbase on the Cape, for instance. Plenty of wind in that area.

BTW, those things will be barely visible from Nantucket.

of course not seriously.  my point is that this is all very very complicated and we should look no further than the mirror to assign the blame.

[/quote]

Of course we need to look in the mirror.  Us spoiled western folk who think we must have all our watns, fantasy and needs granted in a timely manner don't care and never did properly caculate the cost of making that green back or taking that land and then taking or making slaves to work it for us so we could get more of it.  When we talk of the human problem in this, it's nothing but the age old human problem of wanting more.  Except in the western world, we have created a society that says those traits are noble and traits that have helped humantiy to have an " easier " existence.  I think we have made some headway with regards to human rights and etc. One of  The last strongholds is how to deal with the super wealthy when they are in control of natural resources that the entire world depends on.  Like water in a desert.

There is a fine line in wanting to be fair and allow folks that have worked hard to keep the fruit of their labor and at some point slamming the door on what else they can do in search of more wealth when what they are dealing with stands to harm the entire planet.   Like the recent flu scare.  I don't think it's wise to allow those who can make diseases and drugs for diseases to operate free from severe regulation... human nature being what it is.   It doesn't take long for those making the stuff to think they can make something they " think " they can contain... that will make folks sick...who must buy their drugs to make them well and in the process  make the drug companies trillions.  Next thing you know nature takes it's course and you have an uncontrollable pandemic.  Oil is the same.  One day someone is going to get a bill through that allows for some new drilling technique in some place like Alaska and we are going to see a disaster like the world has never seen before.  Maybe we drill too deep and set off some chain of earthquakes or release some unknown gas or germ or etc.

Is the worst thing that can happen is we don't have a jet set or more millionairs than at any time or country in history?  Would not having those things make life all that bad?  The age old conflict between industralism and aggrarianism does make you stop and wonder sometimes.   I don't know the answer.  I do know our track record as a species on this planet is not good, but when there is a major concern by the populace brought on by a need...humans have found ways to change things for the better.

I think there is better and sometimes we might consider that maybe there is not better products to be made, but that our thinking needs to change and become better about such things.

Maybe we don't need to find the optimum flex in a performance surfboard.  Maybe what the state of the art in performance surfboards and surfing is today shouldn't be the ultimate goal.  It was nothing but something driven by industry anyway.  Folks used to be happy just paddling out.  Now many gripe about their board if they do a bad turn and someone saw them.  Maybe we don't need to find more oil or allow oil companies seeking more wealth to drill anymore.  It's possible we not only need to change what drives our power, but also to change our thinking on how we live.

I mean..homes no longer are just places to provide shelter and live.   They are now trophies to show off and put all those folks who don't fit into your class into their place.  And their neighborhood.  And who cares what happens in neighborhoods that aren't your own.

Maybe we no longer need to let having more stuff rule the day.  We rarely keep and cherish the " stuff " anyway.  It usually just satisfies a momentary urge. usually brought on by envy, lust or greed to get ahead fo the next guy or have the latest before anyone else.

Like the old Split Enz song used to go: It's all Stuff and Nonsense.

DRILL, BABY, DRILL!

near no coverage in US…just like near no coverage of the MASSIVE fkn spill off AUS a while back.

it doesn’t reflect positively on the big money who’s pushing for more of this archaic endeavor.

Maybe so;  But it's not even listed in the top ten news stories of the day on AOL news.  So much for the future of media being the internet.

LOL @ AOL as a news source. Do you still use an abacus instead of a calculator too?

The spill is front page news on CNN.com and BBC.com

I have to attend oil spill training every year, it’s a part of my job. You can’t just go out and start helping, there’s a 24 hour training for Hazardous Waste Operations.

I’m hearing that could be weeks or more. 5,000 barrels a day for weeks will be a mess. It’s supposed to reach land tomorrow, so it could be coming on shore for weeks. Any major clean up won’t occur until they can stop the source. This is a huge problem because know one really knows how much oil is coming out of that well.

I heard that it was the NOAA people that brought the estimate up from 1,000 barrels a day. BP is going to try to keep this quiet, but it’s going to be a giant PR mess.  Hurricane season starts in a couple of months, so they have a short window to get the mess cleaned up.

Another thing… we had an oil spill here on Oahu years ago. It was Chevron’s pipeline, but it occurred just outside of our company’s property and it was right along Pearl Harbor. It was only a relatively small spill, but it was a mess.

The oil first hit a stream then it went into Pearl Harbor. As the oil flowed through the different salinity and temperatures it would rise or fall, and it would clump up or become more fluid. It was extremely hard to catch with floating booms.

It would really suck to see this beautiful Beach contaminated with oil

Ha!  Nobody with a mind watches CNN or logs onto CNN.com.  And who in the US cares what little old lady Gordon Brown called a "bigot' today?  Truth is Bro;  NO news agency gave this story/disaster the attention it deserved because they had their head up their A$$e$ about other things like Lindsey Lohahan's "breakdown" Goldman/Sachs etc.  The late nite radio show "Coast to Coast " broke the story on the day it ocurred and updated nightly.  Figure that;  A late nite radio show whos' topics are usually to do with UFO's, Big Foot and "Remote Veiwing" .  It only took our own president eight days to respond.  Lightening quick response.  He probably didn't even know about it until yesterday.

Above comments editied;  In the spirit of "toning down my rhetoric".   Lowel--------------------AKA    Hd McDing

This is likely to get way worse than people think…

For sure!  A couple more leaks at the well head were discovered today.  The slick reached the mouth of the Mississippi this evening.

I'd be willing to bet this was no accident.  Timing around earth day and the cap and trade bill are a little suspiscious.  Would not be surprised at all if it was Earth First or some other enviro-terrorist group.  Read yesterday that the government is sending SWAT teams to guard other rigs in the area.  They must know something and are not saying.

A fitting graphic for this nightmare scenario -

Runours have been circulating today; but NO facts  If you look at the circumstance, conditionn of the well etc, it does make one wonder.

Howzit balsa, I am not big on nuclear plants but I read some thing a few years ago that made a lot of sense and eased my mind a little. Do you know that France is the one country that every nuclear plant is exactly the same as far as the building goes. That is a great thing since if a problem arises then they can check all the plants for the same problem. Here in the US they are built most likely by the lowest bidder which is stupid and I wonder if any 2 are the same. When it comes to nuclear technology your country is way in front of the other countries. As for the oil leak, Yahoo has been on top of it rom day one andit id still the top news story there. I read today that the company that built and ran it never even considered tht what happened could happen, can we say small minded jerks. Aloha,Kokua

No doubt.  Only baby oil!!

Keeping my thoughts on those in the gulf & FL.  Hope the impact is not as bad as expected.

Well, I don’t know what news you have where you are but up here its always the first thing on our news and it has been like that since the day the rig exploded and caught fire.

Well, hurricane season is right around the corner and there's no way in hell BP will be able to contain, and clean this up by then.  Is anybody else envisioning aerosolized oil travelling hunderds of miles inland, across the mainland into the Atlantic, or over Mexico into the Pacific?

Maybe my take on this is a little too alarmist . . . I'm sure the phenomenon is cyclical like global warming and completely unrelated to man's wreckless and greed inspired manipulation of all natural resources.  Who wants to bet a tanker of acetone that this mess isn't confined by the shoreline or to this incident?

here are some shots of the explosion - doesnt even look real..... see more here: http://www.surf-station.com/community/showthread.php?t=31936

thinking of all that oil drifting through the beaches and rivers and creeks makes me feel sick

Would you be surprised that Haliburton had finished the concrete cap 20 hours before the blowout?

Would you be surprised that the acoustic shear bar was not installed because it ‘cost too much’ at 500K?

I am a member of EF! and other groups, you implying that EF! or any other pro Earth group had something to do with this nightmare smells like a bad case of fucking idiot.

Do you have a bad case of fucking idiot?

Enviro-terrorist.

Fucking simpleton.

I will take your bet.

Oh, your spelling is suspicious.
