OK guys I know this isn’t related to board building(unless you are trying to build a shark-proof surfboard), but the sunday morning TV shows repoted a Great White attack in Grace Australia this AM West Coast USA7/11 time. The repot said the surfer got to the beach alive, but later died. They showed his board, completly bitten in half. Witnesses said the shark was the size of a car. Any other info? My prayers go to the family of this surfer . The guy that got it on Maui last year was a good friend of mine. McDing
we must have been writing our posts simultaneously…how the timing…

he was a real good friend of mine , ive known him for 16 years now…
he was surfing a break called lefties, near gracetown…
the story from crew who were there , is , he was in the channel between lefties and the next break noisies ,the first small shark(3 meters) came and took a chunk out of his board and knocked him off , when he was off his board the second shark (5 meters) came up from underneath and hit him real hard and lifted him out of the water…at this stage he was seen punching it and trying to attack its face…
he never made it to the beach alive…

One of my friends north of here had been run out of the water twice this spring by whiteys chasing mammals. One fatty and one jouvie, moving very fast in the clear water.
Guys---- I am so sorry to hear about this attack. When it happens close to home or to someone you know, it is especially devastating. Again-- my prayers are for family and friends, that they maybe comforted in their grief.
Bert,
Sorry to hear that you have lost two people close to you this week, I cant begin to imagine how you feel. From what you’ve said of your mum and what I’ve heard of Brad they both lived a rewarding life and shaped the lives of many.
I surfed at trigg this morning, very quiet, glassy, amazing sunrise and a somber mood. A fitting tribute from the elements.
cheers
Gray
Bert,
We are continuing in our prayers for you. Very sad week.
Bert, I am truly sorry for the loss of your friend, and a fellow surfer. I’ve read the reports and this was a brutal ambush styled attack. My prayers go out for his family, and all you guys who surf this area. Not sure if there is any way to be prepared for this kind of attack. Probably not. Of course he was in “their” environment, but I would probably hunt those sharks down. The one sounded like he was abnormally “fat”. Brad payed the ultimate price, and he will not be forgotten. I pray for all your guys safety while surfing around perth. I’ve been planning a trip down that way for some time, just to surf margarets and north point. Not so sure now…
Bert,
Sorry about your friend. More prayers for family and friends. Myself and others have playfully made jokes and comments about the great whites off our coast. Making jokes is probably part of the denial we go through to enter the water and take that risk. When it happens it really puts that shit into perspective. I don’t joke about it anymore. Sorry. Mike
I saw a huge white off point loma here in san diego. Halfway between us and the boat. He seemed to be “sniffing” right along the track where we paddled to the line-up. Minimum 3 foot dorsal. Never forget the look of that fin. It’s forged in my mind forever. I can conjer that image up in my mind at will ,like it happened 5 minutes ago. Haven’t been back since. I guess i’m a puss. So sorry this happened.
Geeze, My thoughts go to any one who knew Brad, He was surfing ‘Lefthanders’ an orthough the South West is infamous for Sharks…Left handers is genarally not regarded as ‘sharky’. This shows that It could happen anywhere. Lefthanders is one of the best swell magnets in the area and can often get very crowded. Once again my thoughts go to Brads freinds and family.
Happy Surfing.
Josh.
